Jay Bilas Bracket: Second-Round Picks ESPN Analyst Got Wrong

Andrew KulhaMar 14, 2012

ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas is an expert, but he got a few picks wrong in the second round of his 2012 NCAA tournament bracket.

To be fair, I agree with him on most of his picks, which you can find here by the way, but there are a couple teams he has moving on in the first round that I just don't agree with.

It's tough to get every pick right—actually it's almost impossible—so I think it's safe to say that we can give the man a pass here.

Here's what Bilas will get wrong.

"No. 7 Florida over No. 10 Virginia: The Cavaliers will pack it in, and the Gators will shoot it over the top. I favor the team that can score," he said.

I just have a fundamental disagreement with what Bilas is saying here. While offense is such a huge factor, defense wins championships. I'd take defensive basketball in a tournament like this over offense any day of the week.

The Cavaliers should be able to shut down the Gators shooters with their feisty defensive mentality, and after that Florida doesn't have much as to turn to.

This game will end up being an upset.

Next, he said:

"No. 11 NC State over No. 6 San Diego State: The Pack are bigger and better on the glass. But, San Diego State is an older group with transfers that understands how to win and how to play. NC State has to beat the Aztecs on the glass to win."

Once again, this is just a fundamental difference between myself and Bilas as far as what we are looking for in a matchup. You can't tell me that the team that is better on the boards is going to lose this game.

Rebounding and defense are literally the cornerstone of winning basketball. I'll take San Diego State here.
