Dick Vitale Bracket: Analyzing Every Pick
Dickie V is known for his outlandish statements, his distinct voice and his unparalleled knowledge of college basketball.
Vitale finished his bracket Monday morning, and it is time to analyze every pick he made for the 2012 NCAA Tournament.
I have broken down Vitale's bracket by region, and have provided analysis for each interesting pick.
South Region
1 of 5First Round
No .1 Kentucky beats No. 16 Mississippi Valley/ Western Kentucky winner
No. 9 UConn beats No. 8 Iowa State; UConn will turn it on when it counts. I think Iowa St. will be a tough matchup for UConn. They must shut down Royce White.
No. 5 Wichita St. beats VCU; I love this pick. I think Wichita St. could actually be this year's VCU.
No. 4 Indiana beats No. 13 New Mexico St.; I agree with this pick. Indiana has proven they can play on a tough stage.
No. 6 UNLV beats No. 11 Colorado
No. 3 Baylor beats No. 14 South Dakota State
No. 7 Notre Dame beats No. 10 Xavier; Mike Brey has done a fantastic job with this team. The Fighting Irish should get past Xavier.
No. 2 Duke beats No. 15 Lehigh
Round of 32
No. 1 Kentucky beats No. 9 UConn; The Wildcats will prove to be too much for the Huskies.
No. 5 Wichita State beats No. 4 Indiana; A great season for Tom Crean's team ends here. The Shockers will continue to "shock" the world. Very dangerous mid-major, I think they can make it to the Sweet 16.
No. 3 Baylor beats No. 6 UNLV
No. 2 Duke beats No. 7 Notre Dame; I disagree with this pick. I think the Blue Devils should be on upset alert here, especially with an injury to Ryan Kelly.
Sweet 16
No. 1 Kentucky beats No. 5 Wichita State; I agree completely with this pick/matchup. The Shockers will have an amazing run, but the depth and athleticism of Kentucky will prove to be too much.
No. 2 Duke beats No. 3 Baylor; Duke won't make it this far and they will be knocked out in the second round.
Elite Eight
No. 1 Kentucky beats No. 2 Duke; The No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament will punch their ticket to New Orleans.
West Region
2 of 5First Round
No. 1 Michigan State beats No. 16 LIU Brooklyn
No. 8 Memphis beats No. 9 Saint Louis; I disagree with this pick. St. Louis will take down Memphis here.
No. 5 New Mexico beats No. 12 Long Beach State; This is one of my upsets; Long Beach State is the real deal.
No. 4 Louisville beats No. 13 Davidson; Louisville is vulnerable, but they should get past Davidson.
No. 6 Murray State beats No. 11 Colorado State; This game is a tough one to call. The Racers have been a great story, but are they the real deal?
No. 3 Marquette beats BYU/Iona winner; Marquette is an excellent team and I see them going far.
No. 7 Florida beats No. 10 Virginia; I don't love this pick. Virginia is one of the best defensive teams in the country, and can slow Florida down. If the Gators struggle from the outside, expect them to go down here.
No. 2 Missouri beats No. 15 Norfolk State
Round of 32
No. 1 Michigan State beats No. 8 Memphis; Tom Izzo and Draymond Green are too tough.
No. 4 Louisville beats No. 5 New Mexico; I disagree with this pick. Louisville is overrated and will go down to Long Beach St. here.
No. 6 Murray State beats No. 3 Marquette; Marquette will prevail and the Golden Eagles are an excellent squad. Darius Johnson-Odom and Jae Crowder are fantastic.
No. 2 Missouri beats No. 7 Florida; The Tigers guard play will propel them to victory.
Sweet 16
No. 1 Michigan State beats No. 4 Louisville; The Spartans are playing some of the best basketball in the country.
No. 2 Missouri beats No. 6 Murray State; The Tigers will advance to the Elite Eight riding Marcus Denmon, Kim English and the Pressey brothers.
Elite Eight
No. 2 Missouri beats No. 1 Michigan State; I couldn't agree more. Denmon and Co. will find their way to NOLA.
East Region
3 of 5First Round
No. 1 Syracuse beats No. 16 UNC-Asheville
No. 8 Kansas State beats No. 9 Southern Miss; Frank Martin's squad will face a tough test, but will prevail.
No. 5 Vanderbilt beats No. 12 Harvard; The Commodores' struggles in the first round will end this year.
No. 4 Wisconsin beats No. 13 Montana; I disagree with this pick. Montana is hot and winning its last 14 games. Wisconsin struggles often on offense, this will hurt them big time.
No. 6 Cincinnati beats No. 11 Texas
No. 3 Florida State beats No. 14 St. Bonaventure; The Seminoles are hot coming off of their ACC Championship.
No. 10 West Virginia beats No. 7 Gonzaga; I like Gonzaga here. Sacre is tough to stop.
No. 2 Ohio State beats No. 15 Loyola Maryland
Round of 32
No. 1 Syracuse beats No. 8 Kansas State; This is where the first No. 1 seed falls. K State is a great rebounding team, and 'Cuse struggles on the glass.
No. 5 Vanderbilt beats No. 4 Wisconsin; The senior experience on Vanderbilt will be the difference.
No. 3 Florida State beats No. 6 Cincinnati; FSU is hot and you can't underestimate a team that is playing their best basketball (see UConn last year).
No. 2 Ohio State beats No. 10 West Virginia; Jared Sullinger wants this one.
Sweet 16
No. 5 Vanderbilt beats No. 1 Syracuse; I have the Orange going down, too, but a round earlier.
No. 3 Florida State beats No. 2 Ohio State; Love this pick, have to go with the FSU.
Elite Eight
No. 3 Florida State beats No. 5 Vanderbilt; The Seminoles keep rolling.
Midwest Region
4 of 5First Round
No. 1 North Carolina beats No. 16 Lamar/Vermont winner
No. 8 Creighton beats No. 9 Alabama; Creighton is an excellent team, and at one point, Doug McDermott was a candidate for POY.
No. 5 Temple beats No. 12 California/USF winner
No. 4 Michigan beats No. 13 Ohio U; John Beilein does not lose in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
No. 11 NC State beats No. 6 San Diego State; I like this pick. The Wolfpack have gotten better and better as the year has progressed.
No. 3 Georgetown beats No. 14 Belmont; I disagree with this pick. Belmont is one of the most dynamic offensive teams in the country. They will upset the Hoyas here.
No. 7 St. Mary's beats No. 10 Purdue; Toss up game here.
No. 2 Kansas beats No. 15 Detroit
Round of 32
No. 1 North Carolina beats No. 8 Creighton; the Tar Heels are just too athletic and too long for Creighton.
No. 4 Michigan beats No. 5 Temple; Beilein's crew is a tough perimeter shooting team, and will go through to the Sweet 16.
No. 3 Georgetown beats No. 11 NC State; I have No. 14 Belmont upsetting NC State and continuing their Cinderella story.
No. 2 Kansas beats No. 7 St. Mary's; Thomas Robinson and Tyshawn Thomas will dominate.
Sweet 16
No. 1 North Carolina beats No. 4 Michigan; North Carolina is too talented and are a terrific rebounding team. The lack of front line size will hurt Michigan.
No. 3 Georgetown beats No. 2 Kansas; I disagree with this pick. Kansas will move on.
Elite Eight
No. 1 North Carolina beats No. 3 Georgetown; North Carolina heads back to the Final Four.
Final Four and Championship Game
5 of 5Final Four
No. 1 Kentucky beats No. 2 Missouri; The Wildcats have the best defensive force that college basketball has seen in quite some time.
No. 1 North Carolina beats No. 3 Florida State; The hot Seminoles run into a very tough Carolina squad. Their great story comes to an end against the Tar Heels.
Championship
No. 1 Kentucky beats No. 1 North Carolina; John Calipari finally gets to cut down the net in New Orleans. I think the Wildcats are too tough defensively, and have too many weapons to contain.
