2012 NFL Mock Draft: Players Who Don't Belong in First Round

Andrew KulhaMar 13, 2012

There's nothing more annoying than watching an overvalued and overrated player get drafted in the first round of the NFL draft.

It happens every year—specifically at the end of the first round—and every year some unlucky team walks away with a second-round talent for a first-round value.

There are a handful of players this year that I believe will be overvalued and go a bit too high.

I wouldn't make these picks per say, but I have a feeling the following teams I highlight will take a player who doesn't belong in the first round.

1. Indianapolis Colts: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

Life without Peyton Manning will be surprisingly good for Colts fans.

2. Washington Redskins: Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor

The Redskins made a bold move, and they'll be getting a quarterback that was worth every single pick they gave up.

3. Minnesota Vikings: Matt Kalil, OT, USC

Kalil is an extremely impressive player, and he's going to be the franchise left tackle for a long time.

4. Cleveland Browns: Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama

I've been saying it for a while now, and it still remains true. Richardson is the best running back to enter the NFL since LaDainian Tomlinson and Marshall Faulk before him. He's going to be a beast in this league.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU

Claiborne will be a shutdown corner in the NFL. This is a no-brainer pick.

6. St. Louis Rams: Michael Brockers, DT, LSU

The Rams have a few more pieces to work with now, so they'll go ahead and take Brockers. He has the potential to be the best defensive player taken in this draft when all is said and done.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State

Blackmon fills the Jaguars' desperate need for a No. 1 wide receiver. He's going to be great.

8. Miami Dolphins: Nick Perry, DE, USC

Perry is an extremely versatile defensive end who is going to be a beast coming off the edge in the Dolphins' new 4-3 scheme.

9. Carolina Panthers: Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis

Poe has been jumping up the boards since the combine, and considering he's 6'3'', 346 and ran a sub-five 40, there's plenty of reason to be high on him. He's going to be a stud for the Panthers.

10. Buffalo Bills: Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina

Quinton Coples shouldn't be a first-round pick, let alone taken this high. That being said, he's going to get taken here just because of his name and the hype that surrounds his potential.

There are concerns about his production, his focus and his work ethic, and all of those are things that cause me to believe that he's got extreme bust potential.

You can't take a guy with those problems in the first round, let alone in the top 10.

This is going to come back to bite the Bills.

11. Kansas City Chiefs: Riley Reiff, LT, Iowa

Reiff is a great, if not underrated, left tackle. The Chiefs will be happy with this pick.

12. Seattle Seahawks: Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina

Ingram is going to be extremely dangerous on this already young and athletic defense.

13. Arizona Cardinals: Cordy Glenn, OG/OT, Georgia

Glenn really jumped up the board because of his speed and agility at the combine. Add that to the fact that he's versatile, and the Cardinals will like this pick.

14. Dallas Cowboys: David DeCastro, OG, Stanford

DeCastro is the second best overall player in the draft, but he falls here because of needs taking precedent over wants. The Cowboys need some help on the line, and they're getting a future All-Pro here.

15. Philadelphia Eagles: Dont'a Hightower, ILB, Alabama

The Eagles desperately need help at linebacker, so Hightower will be a very attractive pick here.

16. New York Jets:  Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame

Floyd looked great at the combine, and he has done enough to become the No.2 wideout in this class. The Jets gave Mark Sanchez a big contract, and now they're giving him some weapons.

17. Cincinnati Bengals: Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama

People are scared of Jenkins because of his off-field issues, but he's a top-15 talent the Bengals will gladly pick up.

18. San Diego Chargers: Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina

The Chargers are going to lose Vincent Jackson. They'll need to replace him here.

19. Chicago Bears: Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor

Wright will become very dangerous with Jay Cutler throwing deep bombs to him.

20. Tennessee Titans: Courtney Upshaw, LB/DE, Alabama

Upshaw has slipped a bit, but the Titans would love to have him here.

21. Cincinnati Bengals: Lamar Miller, RB, Miami

Miller ran a great time at the combine and solidified himself as the No. 2 back behind Richardson. The Bengals will use him here to replace Cedric Benson, who is most likely gone.

22. Cleveland Browns: Stephen Hill, WR, Georgia Tech

Hill is another guy who has worked himself into the first round. The Browns desperately need to give Colt McCoy someone to throw to, so they'll gladly take him here.

23. Detroit Lions: Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina

The Lions have a ton of needs to fill, but they'll focus on Gilmore. He presents the best value at this spot.

24. Pittsburgh Steelers: Fletcher Cox, DT, Mississippi State

Cox is a huge defender who will really fill a space nicely for the Steelers.

25. Denver Broncos: Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State

Adams has been in and out of my first round for a while now, so he's a good player to focus on. As far as talent alone, Adams is not a first rounder, so he's really more of a second-round value.

That being said, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the Broncos will be able to sign Peyton Manning.

They're going to want to do everything they can to protect him, as he's not the most mobile of quarterbacks, so I think they'll stretch for Adams here as a right tackle.

He's a natural left, but they'll move him over to right and give Manning two bookends on the line.

This is a stretch, but protecting Manning is priority No. 1.

26. Houston Texans: Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers

Great pick here by the Texans. Sanu will thrive in their offense.

27. New England Patriots (via Saints): Jamell Fleming, CB, Oklahoma

I look at Fleming and see an early second-round value. The Patriots are going to look at him and see someone who can fill a desperate need at corner, and this is technically an extra pick.

Fleming has good mobility, plays big at the line of scrimmage and can really thrive in New England's system.

28. Green Bay Packers: Whitney Mercilus, LB, Illinois

Mercilus is going to become incredible across from Clay Matthews.

29. Baltimore Ravens: Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin

The Ravens are going to need a center in the near future, so Konz makes sense here.

30. San Francisco 49ers: Rueben Randle, WR, LSU

Randle is not a first-round player, but he's going to go here because of the absolute run on wide receivers earlier in the first round.

If team needs weren't being factored in, Randle would be a early second-round guy, but because the need for a wideout is so high for so many teams, the 49ers will stretch here.

31. New England Patriots: Jared Crick, DT, Nebraska

Some people are worried about Crick and potential injury issues, but there is no doubt in my mind he's going to thrive with New England.

32: New York Giants: Orson Charles, TE, Georgia

Charles ran a great time at the combine. He essentially ran himself into the first round.
