Nearly 21 years after current ESPN analyst, and former Los Angeles Lakers legend, Earvin "Magic" Johnson announced to the world he was diagnosed with the HIV virus, an ESPN Films documentary has been released.
"The Announcement" is expected to give fans of the game, and of Johnson, a perspective of what it was like for Johnson to go through this and how it has forever changed his life. It is a documentary that will not only tell fans more about Johnson, as it will also paint Johnson in a new light in the minds of fans.
Those who appreciate the game of basketball understand the vast accomplishments that Johnson brought to the game on the court.
Arguably the best Lakers player in team history and a PG that forever changed the position, Johnson has been praised for his accomplishments on the court since arriving in the league.
Yet off the court, Johnson has been less prevalent in the sports headlines since he announced that he was diagnosed with HIV on November 7th, 1991.
As over 20 years have passed, it will be this documentary, ESPN Films' "The Announcement," that will give those around the game of basketball a better sense of what exactly Johnson was going through as a special basketball talent fighting to live his life with the virus.
Directed by Nelson George, this documentary inevitably gives fans a better understanding of just how impacting the moment was not only for Johnson, but for the sports world. Since he was such a tremendous talent in the league at the time of his announcement, the news was as difficult to swallow as any in the game's history.
The documentary will leave fans of the game with a greater perspective of Magic Johnson, and in turn, have those fans see Johnson in a new light as well.
