Big East Tournament 2012: Champion Team Will Make Noise in the NCAA Tournament

Alex KayMar 10, 2012

Louisville and Cincinnati are squaring off tonight for the Big East title, which is an accomplishment in its own right, but it also bodes well for the champion's tournament run.

Over the past five years, the winner of the Big East has won a National Championship (UConn in 2011), went to two Final Fours (West Virginia in 2010, Georgetown in 2007) and had an Elite Eight appearance (Louisville in 2009).

These teams warmed up in their conference tournament against some of the best opponents and got used to competing against tough foes on a nightly basis.

It helps them prepare for the grind of the tournament, which is probably why the team that conquers the Big East has been able to make a run a week later during March Madness.

A win will also help secure a top seed because, despite what the bracket-makers are supposed to do, it's clear that the most recent body of work is the most important. You can bet that both the Bearcats and Cardinals are going to try like hell to pull out a victory tonight to get the momentum they need and lock up a high seed on Selection Sunday.

There's going to be a battle in the low post between Yancy Gates and Gorgui Dieng, and it promises to be an extremely close game for the full 40 minutes. There may even need to be overtime to settle who wins this thing.

Expect the coaches and players to not stop fighting as they realize the importance of this game for their chances in the Big Dance.
