David Stern Reportedly Done as NBA Commissioner After 2014 Season

Scott SemmlerJun 7, 2018

David Stern is reportedly stepping down as NBA commissioner after the 2014 season, according to the New York Daily News, which reported that insiders are saying Stern was planning on telling the NBA owners at the April Board of Governors meeting.

The 69-year-old has been commissioner of the NBA since 1984, adding seven NBA teams, building 28 arenas and getting the NBA through four lockout periods.

There is no telling what this really means for the NBA, since it has been a long time since anyone but Stern has steered the NBA ship.

The next CBA discussion is not due until 2018 and Stern will be long gone by then, which is probably a reason why now is as good a time as any to announce his retirement from the NBA. He has built a strong foundation for the league, as well as avoided harsh criticism for the lockout that knocked out a good chunk of this season.

What Happens Next?

The NBA must decide on the next commissioner if the report that Stern is retiring after 2014 does in fact come true.

All indications are that deputy commissioner Adam Silver will take over that role, as most reports say he is a simple shoo-in to be promoted as the man in charge.

The Daily News is reporting that over 90 percent of the owners are in support of Silver as the next NBA commissioner, with the new CBA discussion in 2018 being the next hurdle he will have to worry about. All Silver needs is a majority vote to be named commissioner.
