Boston Celtics Trade Rumors: Dealing Rajon Rondo Would Be Horrible Mistake
It seems like Rajon Rondo is always on the trading block, but the Celtics would be stupid to dump their franchise point guard.
During his usual Thursday call to WEEI (93.7 FM) in Boston, Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge attempted to dispel the rumors that he is trying to ditch Rondo.
""He's our best player, he's the most important part of our future," said Ainge. "There's no way we're actively trying to trade Rondo. I've made zero calls to try to trade him, and I won't."
"
Of course, if you believe that, you probably aren't familiar with Ainge's history. I wouldn't say he's a disloyal guy, but if he got an offer he liked, he'd trade one of his own kids without hesitation.
However, Ainge should turn away callers for Rondo, and hang up the phone if he's the one dialing.
Rondo is a special talent at the point guard position. He's averaging a career high in points (14.2 per game), while posting his usual numbers of 9.8 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 1.7 steals.
He's dishing out 11.3 assists per contest since the All-Star break, and he dropped his third triple-double of the season on Brandon Jennings and the Bucks last Wednesday. Rondo is the only player with multiple triple doubles this season, a feat that he approaches on a regular basis.
Rondo certainly has some issues, which is why he's often the scapegoat in Boston. His jumpshot? Hideous. His free-throw shooting? Just terrible. His temper? Not exactly ideal.
But for all his deficiencies, Rondo is still one of the five best point guards in the league. Young, championship-tested point guards with pterodactyl wingspans and exceptional vision don't come around too often.
If the Celtics trade theirs, they'll regret it for years. Danny Ainge has some tough decisions to make, and what to do with his flawed roster is at the forefront.
If he deals Rondo, however, he'll have some new decisions to make, like whether he'd prefer to work for ESPN, TNT or NBATV.
