Washington Redskins Must Make Moves for Robert Griffin III
The Washington Redskins, who are one of the NFL's most quarterback-needy teams, currently hold the No. 6 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. The combination of Rex Grossman and John Beck didn't accomplish much in 2011, and a change towards long-term stability is what Washington needs.
With that in mind, the Redskins should do whatever they can to swing a trade with the St. Louis Rams for the No. 2 overall selection in April's draft so they can secure Robert Griffin III.
If Washington can't pull off some kind of deal for Indianapolis Colts' quarterback Peyton Manning (assuming he's fully healthy) that also brings receiver Reggie Wayne to town, then Griffin has to be the guy. At this week's NFL Scouting Combine, Griffin dispelled many of the fears observers had of his abilities.
The Baylor quarterback measured in at 6'2" and 223 pounds, showing he has the size that some didn't think he would. In addition to that, his 4.41-second performance in the 40-yard dash showed that he has game-changing speed at the position.
In addition to his obvious physical gifts, Griffin is also a great kid who is smart, dedicated and an extremely hard worker. His intangibles are off the charts, and he will be a great representative for whatever franchise winds up with him.
By adding Griffin to a young offense that already has stud tight end Fred Davis and emerging running back Roy Helu, the Redskins would be well-positioned for the future. All they would need to do via free agency is add a solid receiver, since Jabar Gaffney and Santana Moss aren't exactly a dream duo out wide.
Thinking of the possibilities for a trio of Griffin, Davis and Helu really is fun, because all three guys are fast, athletic and have a knack for making plays.
As I said, if the Redskins can't work out some kind of miracle deal to land a healthy Manning and Wayne to lead the offense, they have to do whatever it takes to land Griffin. He would be the perfect face for Washington's franchise moving forward.
