2012 NFL Pro Day Schedule: One Prospect to Watch on Every Day of the Schedule
The National Football League has released the full schedule of "pro days," where collegiate athletes from around the country who either missed the NFL combine or wish to bolster their stock after performing in it will showcase their wares in front of scouts.
Here's a complete breakdown of the pro-day schedule, as well as a key player to watch on each day of the calendar, so make yourself comfortable and get your popcorn ready!
March 1: Michael Egnew
1 of 23Schools Working Out: Missouri
Player to Watch: Michael Egnew, TE
The first team All-American has already shown to be an excellent receiver, but how the 6'5" 245-pound Egnew performs in blocking drills at his pro day could go a long way towards strengthening his stock in April's NFL draft.
March 2: Derek Wolfe
2 of 23Schools Working Out: Cincinnati
Player to Watch: Derek Wolfe, DT
The 6'5" 286-pound Wolfe was Co-Big East Defensive Player of the Year after racking up 70 tackles and 9.5 sacks in 2011, and a strong pro day could bump Wolfe into the NFL draft's second round.
March 5: Matt McCants
3 of 23Schools Working Out: Alabama-Birmingham, Hawaii, McNeese State
Player to Watch: Matt McCants, OT, UAB
Offensive tackle Matt McCants struggled somewhat at the Senior Bowl, so if the 6'6" 309-pounder is going to vault himself into the top 10 players available at his position, McCants is going to need to open some eyes with a big pro day.
March 6: Tony Dye
4 of 23Schools Working Out: Alabama A&M, Arkansas, Auburn, California Lutheran, Clark, Georgia Tech, Rhode Island, Sacramento State, UCLA
Player to Watch: Tony Dye, S, UCLA
After missing most of the 2011 season with a neck injury, Bruins safety Tony Dye will need to impress upon scouts that he's fully recovered and back to his 2010 form, when he led UCLA with 96 tackles.
March 7: Nick Toon
5 of 23Schools Working Out: Alabama, California, California-Davis, Colgate, Fordham, Fort Valley, Kent State, Louisville, Northern Colorado, Oklahoma State, Southern California, Texas A&M, UTEP, Wisconsin, Weber State
Player to Watch: Nick Toon, WR, Wisconsin
Yeah, I know, Ryan Tannehill works out this day too, and should the Texas A&M quarterback miss the combine, that pro day will be a zoo.
However, many eyes on the seventh of March will be on the foot of Wisconsin wide receiver Nick Toon, both to see if he's fully healthy and if he's capable of running the sort of 40 time that could allay concerns about the 6'3" Toon's straight-line speed.
March 8: Alfonzo Dennard
6 of 23Schools Working Out: Buffalo, Clemson, Colorado, Miami (Fla.), Mississippi State, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio, Syracuse, Tulsa, Utah State, Washington, West Texas, Western Kentucky
Player to Watch: Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska
After a Senior Bowl fiasco that ranked somewhere between the Titanic (the ship, not the movie) and Gigli (the movie), Nebraska cornerback Alfonzo Dennard needs stellar showings at both the NFL Scouting Combine and Nebraska's Pro Day if he has any chance of sneaking back into the draft's first round.
March 9: Dan 'Boom' Herron
7 of 23Schools Working Out: Florida International, Montana, Northern Illinois, Ohio State, Purdue, TCU, Troy
Player to Watch: Dan Herron, RB, Ohio State
No one is going to confuse Ohio State running back Dan Herron with Trent Richardson any time soon, but after a scandal and suspension-filled senior season with the Buckeyes, a big pro day could help "Boom" salvage what little draft value he may have left.
March 12: Lucas Nix
8 of 23Schools Working Out: Air Force, Arkansas-Monticello, Central Michigan, Central Washington, Pittsburgh
Player to Watch: Lucas Nix, OT/OG, Pittsburgh
Nix kicked to tackle in 2011 for the Panthers, but he'll almost certainly be headed back to guard in the National Football League and could see his stock rise or fall by nearly a round depending on how the 6'6", 310-pound Nix does in his pro day.
March 13: Lance Dunbar
9 of 23Schools Working Out: Ball State, Florida, Kansas State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Marshall, Maryland, North Texas, Western Michigan
Player to Watch: Lance Dunbar, RB, North Texas
The 5'9" 203-pound Dunbar racked up over 4,000 rushing yards over the past three seasons, but given the level of competition in the Sun Belt Conference, NFL scouts are going to want to see what Lance Dunbar can do with their own eyes.
March 14: Ronnell Lewis
10 of 23Schools Working Out: Bowling Green, Central Arkansas, Central Oklahoma, Florida State, Kansas, Kansas State, Louisiana-Monroe, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Penn State, Tennessee Tech
Player to Watch: Ronnell Lewis, OLB/DE, Oklahoma
Ronnell Lewis is one of the more intriguing players in college football over the next month, as after missing Oklahoma's bowl game and then declaring for the NFL draft, it's been awhile since we've "seen him."
How Lewis performs at the combine and pro day (and in what sort of shape he shows up after such a long layoff) could mean the difference between being taken in the first round or falling to the third.
March 15: Chase Minnifield
11 of 23Schools Working Out: Delaware State, Louisiana Tech, Michigan, UNLV, Nicholls State, Southern Illinois, Townson, Virginia, Virginia Tech, William & Mary
Player to Watch: Chase Minnifield, CB, Virginia
Given the premium on cornerbacks in today's pass-happy NFL, the draft value of Virginia cornerback Chase Minnifield was already solid enough given his decent size and fantastic athleticism, but a quick 40 time in the Cavaliers pro day could vault Minnifield into the first round.
March 16: Lance Mitchell
12 of 23Schools Working Out: James Madison, Missouri State, Oregon State, Richmond, Temple, Tennessee, West Virginia
Player to Watch: Lance Mitchell, S, Oregon State
For safeties to be successful in the National Football League today, it's as important that they be solid in coverage as it is they be solid tacklers, and if Oregon State strong safety Lance Mitchell is going to hear his name called in April, it's vital he convince scouts at the Beavers pro day that's he's as much the former as the latter.
March 19: Nick Foles
13 of 23Schools Working Out: Arizona, Florida Atlantic, LSU, Southern, Wake Forest
Player to Watch: Nick Foles, QB, Arizona
After mixed reviews at the Senior Bowl, 6'5" Arizona quarterback Nick Foles is badly in need of a strong pro day, as anything but that and a solid combine would likely relegate the strong-armed but erratic passer to the fourth round at best.
March 20: Ladarius Green
14 of 23Schools Working Out: Brown, Fresno State, Idaho, Iowa State, Louisiana-Lafayette, North Carolina, North Carolina A&T, South Florida, Texas, Tulane
Player to Watch: Ladarius Green, TE, Louisiana-Lafayette
Ladarius Green is a tight end in the incredibly athletic Aaron Hernandez/Jimmy Graham mold, but at only 237 lbs., the 6'6" Green will likely receive more questions from scouts at the ULL pro day about his strength and blocking acumen than his skill at hauling in catches.
March 21: Audie Cole
15 of 23Schools Working Out: Boston College, Nevada, North Carolina State, North Dakota State, Rutgers, San Diego State, San Jose State
Player to Watch: Audie Cole, MLB, North Carolina State
Linebacker Audie Cole racked up 108 tackles in the middle of the North Carolina State defense in 2011, and a lot of Cole's 2012 draft value may hinge on whether scouts think he's strong enough to play inside, fast enough to play outside or both.
March 22: Robert Griffin
16 of 23Schools Working Out: Baylor, Boise State, East Carolina, Maine, Memphis, Middle Tennessee State, South Dakota, South Dakota State, Stanford, Tennessee-Chattanooga
Player to Watch: Robert Griffin, QB, Baylor
With King Kong and Godzilla both working out on the same day, one wishes they could "channel flip" between Griffin and Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, but since Luck's the presumptive favorite to go first overall, we'll give the nod to Griffin in the hopes that he pulls out all the stops at his pro day.
March 23: Austin Davis
17 of 23Schools Working Out: Jackson State, Missouri Western, N.C. Central, Southern Mississippi, Vanderbilt
Player to Watch: Austin Davis, QB, Southern Miss
At 6'2", 220 pounds, Austin Davis has some potential as a "project" type in the NFL, but Davis needs to convince scouts that he's the signal-caller that led Southern Miss to an upset of Houston in the Conference USA championship game and not the one that played poorly in the Hawaii Bowl.
March 24: Brock Osweiler
18 of 23Schools Working Out: Arizona State
Player to Watch: Brock Osweiler, QB
After somewhat surprisingly foregoing his senior season to enter the NFL, the eyes of many scouts will be firmly planted on 6'8" quarterback Brock Osweiler both at the combine and Arizona State's pro day, and how he performs in those events will go a long way towards determining a draft value that is presently cloudy at best.
March 27: Demario Davis
19 of 23Schools Working Out: Arkansas State, Coastal Carolina, Stephen F. Austin, Washburn
Player to Watch: Demario Davis, LB, Arkansas State
Demario Davis racked up over 240 tackles during his career at Arkansas State, but much like many other players who starred in the Sun Belt Conference, Davis may face an uphill battle when it comes to convincing NFL scouts that he can play with the "big boys".
However, the 6'3", 230-pounder did have a nice week of Senior Bowl practices, so that surely didn't hurt his case.
March 28: Alshon Jeffery
20 of 23Schools Working Out: Central Florida, Connecticut, Northern Iowa, Pennsylvania, South Carolina
Player to Watch: Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina
Many NFL draft experts, including Bleacher Report's own Matt Miller, already have South Carolina wide receiver Alshon Jeffery pegged as a top-10 pick in this April's NFL draft, but the 6'4" wideout could solidify that status by running a fast 40 on his "home" track at his pro day.
March 29: Hebron Fangupo
21 of 23Schools Working Out: Brigham Young
Player to Watch: Hebron Fangupo, DT/NT
Fangupo transferred to Brigham Young from USC, and while he didn't post big stats in 2011, his 6'1" 331-pound frame may well attract some attention from teams running the 3-4 defense that are looking for depth at nose tackle.
April 4: Kelvin Beachum
22 of 23Schools Working Out: SMU
Player to Watch: Kelvin Beachum, OT/OG
The 6'3", 307-pound 2010 All Conference USA performer started every game of his collegiate career at left tackle, but if Kelvin Beachum gets selected in the 2012 NFL draft, it will most likely be to kick inside to play guard.
That's a role that Beachum will have to convince scouts he can fill at SMU's pro day.
April 6: Janzen Jackson
23 of 23Schools Working Out: McNeese State
Player to Watch: Janzen Jackson, FS
After being dismissed from Tennessee in August, Jackson had a quiet season for the Cowboys, and the biggest challenge facing the blazingly fast 6'0" 180-pounder at McNeese State's pro day may be to convince scouts that he's put his checkered past behind him and is ready to return to the All-SEC form he displayed in 2010.
