2012 NFL Mock Draft: Andrew Luck to Indianapolis Colts and Other Perfect Fits
Every NFL team heads into the draft hoping to fill their biggest need with an impact rookie, but few are able to actually accomplish that goal. That's why it's important for a team to develop a backup plan, just in case things don't work out as planned.
If teams aren't able to grab the prospect they were hoping for, it often leads to reaching for a lower-tier player, which makes his bust potential go through the roof. So it's all about finding the best fit while not going overboard to fill a need.
Here's a complete mock draft of Round 1, featuring three perfect fits that will help teams immediately fill a void.
1. Indianapolis Colts (2-14): Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford
Even though there's still an outside chance Peyton Manning could return to the Colts, the recent spat between him and owner Jim Irsay makes it a long shot. That means the team will be looking to fill its quarterback need with the first pick.
They have said they will look at both Luck and Robert Griffin III, but the Stanford signal-caller would be the better fit. He has the ability to step right into the offense Manning built and keep it running like a well-oiled machine.
Indianapolis did a terrific job hosting the Super Bowl, and Luck will start the team's journey toward getting back to the big game.
2. St. Louis Rams (2-14): Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State
Blackmon has separated himself from a very talented group of receivers, which illustrates exactly how talented he is.
3. Minnesota Vikings (3-13): Matt Kalil, OT, USC
The Vikings' search for a dominant offensive tackle will finally end by adding Kalil.
4. Cleveland Browns (3-13): Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor
If Griffin manages to slip through the cracks, he's a no-brainer pick for Cleveland.
5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-12): Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama
Tampa Bay's offense would have an entirely new dimension with Richardson involved.
6. Washington Redskins (5-11): Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M
Tannehill might take longer to develop than the first two quarterbacks taken, but he's worth taking a chance on for the Redskins.
7. Jacksonville Jaguars (5-11): Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU
Claiborne was a major piece of LSU's defense and he'll be the same for Jacksonville.
8. Carolina Panthers* (6-10): Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina
The Panthers need to bring their defense on par with their offense. Coples is a step in the right direction.
9. Miami Dolphins* (6-10): Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa
Miami needs to improve in several areas, including the offensive line, before becoming an AFC East contender again.
10. Buffalo Bills (6-10): Courtney Upshaw, DE/OLB, Alabama
Upshaw will buck the trend of first-round busts the Bills have had trying to fill their pass rushing void.
11. Seattle Seahawks* (7-9): Devon Still, DT, Penn State
The Seahawks weren't able to repeat their magic this season, but they are still just a piece or two away from getting back to the playoffs.
12. Kansas City Chiefs* (7-9): Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford
Even though he's being selected outside the top 10, Martin belongs in the same category as Kalil and Reiff.
13. Arizona Cardinals (8-8): Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama
Even though the Cardinals selected Patrick Peterson in the first round last season, their secondary still finished in the middle of the pack. Adding Kirkpatrick to the mix would would give Arizona two potential shutdown corners.
Since there won't be any elite quarterbacks left on the board, continuing to build the defense into an elite unit will be the team's main priority. Having two elite cornerbacks will be a huge advantage in today's pass-happy NFL.
Kirkpatrick's off-field problems caused his stock to dip over the past month, but he's simply too talented for the Cardinals to pass on at this point.
14. Dallas Cowboys (8-8): Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College
Kuechly will take is tackling machine tendencies from Boston College to Dallas.
15. Philadelphia Eagles (8-8): Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame
The Eagles couldn't live up to the massive hype, but are a team to watch heading into next season with additions like Floyd.
16. New York Jets (8-8): Melvin Ingram, DE/OLB, South Carolina
Ingram is another piece for Rex Ryan to have fun with. Opposing quarterbacks won't be having much fun, though.
17. Cincinnati Bengals (via OAK 8-8): David DeCastro, G, Stanford
The Bengals need to start opening up more running lanes to strike the perfect offensive balance.
18. San Diego Chargers (8-8): Nick Perry, DE/OLB, USC
Perry will finally solve the Chargers' issues at outside linebacker.
19. Chicago Bears (8-8): Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin
This is a case of not knowing what you have until it's gone. The Bears were spoiled by elite center play from Olin Kreutz for more than a decade, but once he left, it became obvious just how crucial he was to the team's offensive line.
Konz would finally fill the hole left by Kreutz. He had a terrific career in Wisconsin and fits the mold of an NFL center. He has the intelligence to set blocking schemes and has the strength not to get overpowered by monster defensive tackles.
He's the epitome of perfect fits. The only thing the Bears have to worry about is another team selecting him before they get a chance to pick because he's their best option by far.
20. Tennessee Titans (9-7): Michael Brockers, DT, LSU
Brockers will eventually become a monster in the middle. It's going to take some time, however.
21. Cincinnati Bengals (9-7): Lamar Miller, RB, Miami
Andy Dalton will benefit from having another safety valve like Miller. It's something Cedric Benson didn't provide.
22. Cleveland Browns (via ATL 10-6): Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina
The Browns can't pass up on a talented receiver like Jeffery at this point in the round.
23. Detroit Lions (10-6): Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State
Detroit is in need of another tackle to protect Matthew Stafford.
24. Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4): Cordy Glenn, G, Georgia
25. Denver Broncos (8-8): Fletcher Cox, DT, Mississippi State
Improving the team's run defense will go a long way in helping the Broncos replicate this season's success.
26. Houston Texans (10-6): Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor
The Texans would be extremely dangerous by adding Wright and getting healthy before training camp.
27. New England Patriots (via NO 13-3): Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska
After a successful career at Nebraska, Dennard is a perfect fit for the Patriots.
28. Green Bay Packers (15-1): Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama
The Packers have a boatload of talent, but need more playmakers on defense.
29. Baltimore Ravens (12-4): Vontaze Burfict, LB, Arizona State
Burfict's entire career outlook will improve if he gets to learn from Ray Lewis.
30. San Francisco 49ers (13-3): Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers
The 49ers offense still isn't up to par. Sanu would help take some pressure off the defense.
31. New England Patriots (13-3): Mark Barron, S, Alabama
After watching their secondary get torched all season, the Patriots should load up on fresh faces in the defensive backfield.
32. New York Giants (9-7): Zach Brown, OLB, North Carolina
Brown isn't the most flashy player, but he's exactly what the Giants could use to fill one of their few holes.
