NBA Rumors: Breaking Down Latest Buzz
The weekend may have been reserved for the NFL and the Super Bowl, but that doesn't mean that the NBA was totally out of the news.
Rumors are aplenty as teams begin to attempt to round out their rosters before the All-Star break at the end of the month.
Here's a look at the latest buzz around the league.
Gilbert Arenas
1 of 10In an attempt to finally catch the eye of an NBA team, Arenas has scheduled a workout in Los Angeles for later this week, but there is no word if the Los Angeles Lakers, or any other NBA team will be in attendance.
Arenas has been mostly linked to the Lakers, but so far Los Angeles has been non-committal on if they have interest or not in the former All-Star point guard.
Dwight Howard
2 of 10While many feel it's a forgone conclusion that the Magic will deal their All-Star center, a lot still has to happen for Howard to pass on the extra $30 million he would get by re-signing with the Magic.
It's not a given just yet.
In the meantime, he and New Jersey Nets point guard Deron Williams have been checking in with friends around the league to inquire about their interest in possibly winding up in a Nets uniform in the future.
J. R. Smith
3 of 10The Los Angeles Clippers and New York Knicks look to be the frontrunner's to land Smith as soon as he's eligible to sign with an NBA team.
The Clippers could use some depth at the small forward spot behind Caron Butler. The Knicks, though, may have the advantage because they could offer him a starting spot at shooting guard.
New York can offer their $2.5 million mini mid-level exemption which the Clippers can't offer, but Los Angeles has a pair of trade exemptions that they can use on any player. One is for $3.8 million and the other is for $2.7 million.
Kenyon Martin
4 of 10After signing Martin over the weekend, both Martin and head coach Vinny Del Negro said there is no timetable set for his Clippers debut. Martin did indicate that he would like to be in uniform before the Clippers' current six-game road trip comes to an end.
Ramon Sessions
5 of 10Session will likely opt out of his contract after this season, but in the meantime could be dealt by the Cavaliers.
So far the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers have checked in on his availability, but so far no deal is in the works.
Brook Lopez
6 of 10After Lopez had surgery to insert a screw into his right foot, his timetable was set at six to eight weeks.
This weekend marked the six week point and while he's doing some light running, Lopez isn't ready to rejoin the team just yet.
It could be a couple of weeks still before we see Lopez ready to play.
Steve Nash
7 of 10Despite some speculation that the Suns could trade Nash, don't look for it to happen anytime soon.
Nash hasn't requested a trade yet and the Suns appear willing to do a new deal with the two-time MVP to keep him in Phoenix until he retires.
Anderson Varejao
8 of 10ESPN's Marc Stein reported that Cleveland is getting calls on Varejao, but with the emergence of Kyrie Irving, the Cavs are telling teams that's he's untouchable.
Joel Przybilla
9 of 10Stein also reports that a Joel Przybilla decision is expected soon and that it's still down to two teams—the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat.
New York Knicks
10 of 10There is still no timetable on the Knicks debut of point guard Baron Davis, who was thought to be set to debut nine days ago against Houston.
In the meantime, Jeremy Lin had a fantastic game in Saturday night's win against New Jersey, begging the question of whether or not he should be the starter until Davis is ready.
As for Amar'e Stoudemire, he will miss tonight's game against the Utah Jazz due to the death of his brother.
