Super Bowl Prop Bets: 4 Craziest Prop Bets for the Big Game

Andrea HangstFeb 5, 2012

The Super Bowl is one of the biggest gambling days of the year in the world of sports, and it's more than just total points and the winner that's being wagered on.

There is a whole series of prop bets, from the traditional to the downright strange.

In the following slides, I detail four prop bets that are on the weirder end of things.

Mentions of David Tyree's Helmet Catch from Super Bowl XLII

1 of 4

The thing about a Super Bowl rematch is that there's going to be much discussion about the events that transpired during the two teams' first meeting.

Such is the case for this year's Super Bowl, with the New York Giants and New England Patriots set to face off in the NFL's biggest game for the second time in four seasons.

In their 2008 matchup, the Giants won in the final seconds, thanks to a stellar drive by quarterback Eli Manning that featured one of the most spectacular plays in Super Bowl history—a leaping catch by Giants receiver David Tyree that he barely held onto, the ball held in place above his head, on his helmet, all the way to the ground.

Granted, a number of other plays still had to be ran before the Giants ultimately scored the game-winning touchdown. But on that drive, Tyree's catch is the most memorable.

Expect the announcers to discuss the Tyree catch a number of times during today's game. I'd say an over/under of six mentions sounds about right.

Live Shots of Peyton Manning

All week long, there's been a secondary storyline floating about Indianapolis that has little to do with the Super Bowl being played there—the status and future of Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.

From a public spat with Colts owner Jim Irsay that required a joint statement of solidarity, to questions being raised about his health and met with the news that Manning has been cleared to play, his name and face have been all over the week's proceedings.

Vegas has the over/under of shots of Manning watching the Super Bowl live in his family's box at 3.5. The over is a smart play here; I wouldn't be surprised if we see him at least 10 times during the broadcast.

Jersey Number to Score First

3 of 4

The over/under for jersey number to score first in the Super Bowl, regardless of team, is 80.5.

If you think that person will be a New England Patriot, then it's safe to go with the over. For the New York Giants, however, it's more of a toss up.

Giants quarterback Eli Manning's most explosive target this season, Victor Cruz, wears No. 80, so he'd be in the under, as would running backs Ahmad Bradshaw (No. 44) and Brandon Jacobs (No. 28), as well as tight end Jake Ballard (No. 48).

Manning's other two receivers, Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham, both wear numbers higher than 80.5 and have just as good of a shot of scoring first as their teammates.

It's a difficult prediction to make and is generally going to come down to making a lucky guess. But what is gambling other than leaving things up to chance?

With four Patriots and two Giants with numbers higher than 80.5, all of whom are dangerous weapons, I like the over.

Will Chad Ochocinco Have at Least One Reception?

4 of 4

It's a simple yes-or-no question Vegas is asking today: Will New England Patriots wide receiver Chad Ochocinco have a single catch in today's Super Bowl matchup against the New York Giants?

If history is any indicator, it seems that the smart answer would be simply, "No."

In the 2011 season, Ochocinco was a Patriot by name only, never living up to the production he was hoped to have by moving to such a high-powered offense. He was targeted 32 times by quarterback Tom Brady, with just 15 receptions for 276 yards and one touchdown and made no impact in the postseason.

Though the Patriots just cut receiver Tiquan Underwood to make room for another defensive player, the only way that Ocho is going to be involved in the Super Bowl is if tight end Rob Gronkowski re-aggravates his ankle injury and has to leave the game.

Even then, it would take some serious desperation on the Patriots' part to make Ocho the centerpiece of a drive. I still think he won't have a reception, though I do believe he will be targeted once or twice.
