2012 NFL Draft: Top 5 Selections ESPN's Todd McShay Got Horribly Wrong

Wes ODonnellFeb 3, 2012

ESPN's Todd McShay released his second mock draft of the year and had some surprising choices in the top five.

We all know the "man with the orange tan" can get a little crazy from time to time, so his mocks are always taken with a grain of salt, but he's already pushing the envelope and we haven't even gotten to the 2012 NFL scouting combine yet.

McShay's entire mock can be seen here, but we're going to take a look at his top five selections and see where he went wrong.

1. Indianapolis Colts: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

It's damn hard to get this pick wrong, and even McShay acknowledges that it's time to move on from Peyton Manning:

"

Luck is a once-in-a-generation prospect with the physical tools and mental makeup to start from day one. Given the financial considerations involved, the smart decision is to draft Luck and part ways with Manning.

"

The Colts have no choice but to make the move.

2. St. Louis Rams: Matt Kalil, OT, USC

The Rams are a prime candidate to move out of this spot come draft day.

They have three needs they can fill—offensive tackle, wide receiver and cornerback—and have three elite prospects—Matt Kalil, Justin Blackmon and Morris Claiborne—to choose from.

St. Louis can't go wrong with any, but could benefit from the hype Robert Griffin III has generated and will generate once the combine rolls around.

The Rams could opt to move down and they desperately need a playmaker like Blackmon on the outside for Sam Bradford.

Kalil is the safest pick if they stay here.

3. Minnesota Vikings: Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa

This is McShay's first wild pick.  Reiff is a very, very solid player with a lot to offer, but there's a chance he maxes out as a right tackle at best.

He could be a great left tackle, but he could also only be a right tackle.  The Vikings need help at the skill positions on both sides of the ball, and could very well be tempted to trade down.

With RG3 generating interest, sitting at No. 3 and taking Reiff is a reach with the remaining teams on the draft board.

McShay isn't projecting trades and that's understandable, but this is a reach for the Vikes if they stay at No. 3.

Minnesota benefits more from trading out, or even drafting Claiborne or Blackmon—two players higher on some boards.

4. Cleveland Browns: Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor

The Heisman Trophy winner should find a home in the top five, but likely the top three.

Come combine time, he's going to charm every team that sits down with him, and both the No. 2 and No. 3 picks will become very available to other teams further down the board.

The Browns would be lucky to see RG3 fall here, but they're likely to be forced to move up the board to get him.

There are numerous conflicting reports on what the Browns want to do (don't trust anything you hear) with this pick.

Expect them to target RG3 if they miss out on a quarterback in trade or free agency.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU

McShay wisely makes note of Trent Richardson's availability, so I can't kill him for the pick here.

Claiborne is the best available player on the board and he fits a major need for this defense.  He will become an elite shutdown corner in this league.

But with new coach Greg Schiano at the helm, this team needs a running game and a running back who can do everything.

Richardson is not only their guy, but he's the only guy in this draft for them.

Claiborne is the No. 2 player on the board for me in this draft, but the Bucs are a team in serious trouble, and offensively, they were almost as bad as they were defensively.

For Schiano to work some magic on defense, he'll need to be able to trust his offense.

Richardson is going to be Tampa Bay's pick.
