Australian Open 2012 Scores: Day 13 Scores and Results Summary
The women's final at the 2012 Australian Open was the only match in Melbourne on Saturday, and three-seed Victoria Azarenka defeated two-seed Maria Sharapova to win her first-ever Grand Slam singles title.
Azarenka won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, and played an excellent match when it counted most despite playing in her first ever Grand Slam final.
As expected, Azarenka was overcome with joy after beating the Russian Star.
""The best feeling, for sure," Azarenka said via USA Today. "I don't know about the game. I don't know what I was doing out there.
"It's just pure joy what happened. I can't believe it's over."
"
Not only has Azarenka won her first-ever Grand Slam title, she will claim the No. 1 ranking in women's tennis since the No. 1 coming into the tournament, Caroline Wozniacki, lost in the quarterfinals to Kim Clijsters.
Azarenka's service game was good, her return game was excellent and her aggressive runs to the net were too much for Sharapova to handle.
""She did everything better than I did today. I had a good first couple of games, and that was about it," Sharapova said. "Then she was the one that was taking the first ball and hitting it deep and aggressive. I was always the one running around like a rabbit, you know, trying to play catch-up all the time."
"
Sharapova has not won a Grand Slam title since 2008, but her run in Melbourne this month is a feat she must feel good about, and it will give her confidence heading into the spring.
Despite her success at the Australian Open throughout her career, Saturday's match was the second time she has been dominated in a really one-sided final in Melbourne.
For Azarenka, she becomes the fourth consecutive women's player to win her first Grand Slam title. This just shows the amount of talent in women's tennis, and the lack of dominant players is really good for the game, and makes the biggest tournaments quite exciting.
With the No. 1 world ranking Azarenka will be very confident heading into her next tournaments, but now she must adjust to being the hunted, instead of the hunter. It's a new role for her, but she's more than capable of handling it.
