Rafael Nadal Will Need More Than Rest to Beat Novak Djokovic in Finals
It seems almost criminal that Rafael Nadal would have to thwart a behemoth test like Roger Federer and then take on the best in the world. That is what is headed his way in Novak Djokovic, and that is why he will be dealt no better than second place.
Just as much as Nadal has owned Federer in his illustrious career, Djokovic has commanded the Spaniard, at least recently.
Last year went a long way into telling us who the best in tennis was. Djoker wears the crown as No. 1 proudly and dispatched Nadal six times in finals last year. If you are talking about momentum, there isn't a better gauge for such things.
Of course, much will be made about endurance and rest. Djokovic will have little of each after a five-hour marathon match against Andy Murray in the semifinals. Djokovic looked spent after finally dispatching of Murray, 6-3, 3-6, 6-7 (4), 6-1, 7-5.
Meanwhile, Nadal gets an extra day's rest ahead of the Grand Slam final that is sure to push the limits of time and physical constraints.
But really, we can't expect that any amount of kicking up feet will help Nadal get over on a player that has been sublime with the racket for over a year now.
It's not as if Nadal is exactly cruising into the finals with the best claim on health. He has been playing with a heavily-bandaged knee after suffering a painful injury off the court in week one. He has claimed that he is completely healed from it, and has proved that with superb play.
There is still the argument, though, that Nadal may need a few weeks of rest and relaxation as much as the next tennis player.
Both players come in with the usual complement of fine serves and outstanding drop shots, forehands and re-worked backhands. This is the kind of match that comes down to intangibles. Nadal once held the edge there, but that has all but vanished after the Year of the Djoker.
Djokovic gives some insight into how he sees himself amidst the fine pantheon of tennis stars. Via ABC News.
""To be honest, I think I matured as a player. I started to believe on the court I could win majors. Rafa and Roger are the most dominant players for the last seven, eight years...It was very hard to take away the titles from them. They will not give you the titles. You have to earn it."
"
And earn it he has.
The Aussie finals will feature two stars of the court that are banged up and gasping for air. But there is plenty of inspiration to will yourself forward at the finals.
Djokovic could use a rest, and so could Nadal. I am taking the better, more poised player at the moment, and that's Novak Djokovic.
