Royal Rumble 2012: John Cena Will Finally Get an Edge After Kane Bout

The people are tired of John Cena.

The trick is not to throw him away, it's to recreate him into a more appetizing version for the masses—and that is a John Cena with an edge. 

It's become abundantly clear that the John Cena we all know has become tiresome to watch. He is booed by the majority of WWE fans, and there is no hope in winning them over in the current personae. 

Then there are those rabid fans that continue to claim Cena as the greatest in sports and entertainment. They will continue to be lead by blindfold, so there is no worry there. 

What Cena needs is an image update, and he needs one badly.

That is exactly where Kane comes in with the latest subplot of darkness, fire and hate. 

While Kane may be the man Cena will battle at Royal Rumble, it's best to think of him as the crafty guide that will get a fallen hero to the other side of his career. 

The nice guy image and "What did I do?" act has run razor thin, and it's time for Cena to grow a pair.

That is why, win or lose, Cena will come away from this Sunday as a darker, more menacing figure. 

I often wondered where the WWE was going when they locked up The Rock and Cena in a WrestleMania bout a year ago. That is a long time to commit to one aspect of this amazing universe. 

There was the hope that the story would unfold nicely, and it simply hasn't. Cena is lame and The Rock is still very much beloved the world over. 

That doesn't bode well for a main event that seems rather uninteresting at the moment.

Nobody wants to see the current state of Cena beat down a legend. And we certainly don't want The Rock to be the victor, only to walk back to Hollywood after the match. 

With the Kane bout, Cena will have an a much needed revision on who he is and what kind of fan would follow him. 

The loyalty will grow under a darker and edgier Cena, and there is just enough time to make that WrestleMania match far more compelling than it was a couple of weeks ago.
