Australian Open 2012: Andy Murray Will Upset Novak Djokovic in Semifinal

Nicholas GossJun 6, 2018

Andy Murray is the best active men's player that hasn't won a Grand Slam singles title, but his breakthrough win could come this season after he defeats world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the semifinal.

Murray defeating Djokovic is a bold prediction, but it's not as crazy as it sounds. For years, Murray has heard critics reminding him about his failure to perform well on the biggest stage, but in Melbourne this month, the British star has been on a mission to reach a third straight Australian Open final.

Last year's final was against Djokovic, who defeated Murray in straight sets for his first of three Grand Slam titles last season.

Now Murray has the chance to avenge his loss from last year and progress to his fourth career final in a Grand Slam event. However, Murray won't let the Djokovic loss from last year's Australian Open final weigh on his mind this week.

"

"It won't be in my mind. You can't think about the past," said Murray.

"I obviously learned a lot from that match, but on the day I will just be thinking about the tactics."

"

Murray dominated Japan's Nishikori in straight sets in the quarterfinal and showed great skill with his backhand and forehand despite his serve not being fantastic.

Murray has dropped one set in Melbourne this year and looks quite confident on the court. If the pressure of winning his first Grand Slam tournament is bothering him, he isn't showing it on the outside.

Against Djokovic, Murray knows what he must do to have a chance at dethroning the world's best player.

"

"You have to play a patient match and pick the right moments to be aggressive," said Murray.

"You can't rush points against him, so I need to play patient tennis and be smart, and that is what I have done since I was a kid.

"I need to use my head on court to work out when to play the right shots, and if I do that I'll have a good chance."

"

Murray's focus is squarely on this match with Djokovic, and judging by his play thus far in Melbourne, the British star is fully capable of defeating his nemesis en route to the final.

Murray will improve his serve and beat Djokovic in a thrilling match to reach the Australian Open final against Spain's Rafael Nadal.
