Australian Open 2012 Results: Day 11 Scores and Results Summary
All but one spot in the men's and women's Australian Open finals have been decided and they are certainly shaping up to be great ones. All three of Day 11's semifinal matches were closely contested, so players will enter the finals with a little extra tread on their tires.
From a rankings standpoint there was one upset, but all three matches could easily have gone either way and few would have been surprised. Familiar faces have already punched their tickets to the finals in both draws, but there is also a first-timer on the ladies' side.
It's fair to say that Day 11 produced the highest-quality tennis of the tournament. Here are the results and analysis of all three Aussie Open singles matches.
No. 3 Victoria Azarenka def. No. 11 Kim Clijsters (6-4, 1-6, 6-3)
As the defending Australian Open champion and more experienced player, Kim Clijsters was probably considered the favorite heading into her semifinal match with Victoria Azarenka.
The third-seeded Belarusian is probably playing the best tennis of her career, however, and is coming off a Sydney Open title.
Azarenka proved capable of handling adversity against Clijsters as she bounced back to win the match after getting destroyed in the second set.
The win was the biggest of Azarenka's young career and it's clear that she realized that as evidenced by her celebration afterward as she broke down in tears.
Azarenka has long been known as a bit of an emotional wreck, but she showed an incredible calmness and resolve to beat Clijsters.
Next up for Azarenka is No. 4 Maria Sharapova in the finals. Azarenka is 3-3 against Sharapova in her career, but she has never played her on such a grand stage.
No. 4 Maria Sharapova def. No. 2 Petra Kvitova (6-2, 3-6, 6-4)
After surprisingly losing to Petra Kvitova in the Wimbledon finals last year, Maria Sharapova certainly wanted to gain a measure of revenge against the powerful Czech in the Australian Open semis.
Sharapova did just that as she outlasted Kvitova in a tough, three-set battle.
Sharapova may have entered the match as the favorite because of her name, but Kvitova had a winning record against Sharapova and possesses the power and lefty look that can give Sharapova problems.
Sharapova has probably been the most impressive player in the women's draw to this point, and that certainly carried over against Kvitova.
Not only is Sharapova's serve working, but her ground strokes are what set her apart from the field.
Sharapova will be faced with a similar task in the Aussie Open final as she was at Wimbledon last year. She will take on first-time finalist Victoria Azarenka in what should be a power vs. power match.
It won't be easy, but I don't think Sharapova will make the same mistakes she did last year against Kvitova at Wimbledon.
No. 2 Rafael Nadal def. No. 3 Roger Federer (6-7, 6-2, 7-6, 6-4)
The semifinal meeting between No. 2 Rafael Nadal and No. 3 Roger Federer was probably the most highly-anticipated match of the tournament and it certainly didn't disappoint as Nadal came back from losing the first set to win the match in four.
Although Federer had over 60 unforced errors on the match, the quality of tennis was incredibly high from both players.
Nadal continued his dominance of Federer in Grand Slam tournaments and now awaits his opponent in the finals.
Nadal will face the winner of the Novak Djokovic vs. Andy Murray semifinal with most expecting the top-ranked Serb to come out on top.
Ahead of his match with Nadal, Federer looked to be playing better than he has in a couple years. He had no adversity heading into the match, so that might explain his struggles when faced with it against Nadal.
Rafa and Fed figure to be chasing after Djokovic all season long, and Nadal is the one who will get the first crack at trying to dethrone a player who won three Grand Slams last year.
