Australian Open 2012: Andy Murray's Keys to a Massive Upset of Novak Djokovic
Andy Murray will take down the seemingly unbeatable Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open...if he can execute the following blueprint.
There are just three items on this blueprint. It can't be that hard to accomplish, right?
Well, it wouldn't be all that hard for Murray if he was playing me, but since he is playing Djokovic, he might run into some difficulties. However, Murray is playing amazing tennis right now.
He has lost only one set in this tournament and he has the goods to pull off this upset.
Force Djokovic Into Running Forehands
Once upon a time, it was effective to pound away at Djokovic's backhand. That is far from the case now. His backhand is deadly and efficient. He seldom fires off an unforced error from this side.
What isn't as efficient is when he is running to his forehand. He can get sloppy with his mechanics here and misfire on shots.
Murray needs to make a conscious effort to consistently work Djokovic far to his backhand side to set him up for these running forehand shots.
Own the Net
Murray cannot be afraid to charge the net in this match and work his serve and volley game. If Murray prefers to sit back on the baseline, Djokovic will kill him with drop shots off of his second serve.
To do this, Murray is going to have to be accurate with his serves and quick at the net.
Mix Up His Shots
This is going to be Murray's best asset in this match. He always has a great mix of shots and is just as adept in putting a little topspin on the ball as he is at adding some slice.
This is going to be essential to change the height of the striking point for Djokovic. He can't allow Novak to hammer away from the same depth on the baseline all match.
Djokovic is deadly when he gets into a baseline rhythm. This will keep the world's No. 1 on his heels and allow Murray to take control of points.
