2012 MLB Free Agency: Top 10 Under-the-Radar Values Still on the Market
Despite spring training being right around the corner, teams are still looking for that quick fix for a reasonable price to shore up any holes they might still have left.
Now that the market has calmed down and time has passed, plenty of players still available could make a huge impact on any team willing to take the chance.
Here are some of the best values still left on the market.
Juan Pierre
1 of 10You can never have enough speed on the basepaths if you're a team in the MLB and with close to 30 stolen bases last season, Juan Pierre has proven he can help in that department.
He may not be as fast as his younger days, but Pierre can still provide a spark at the top of the order and when on base, he is still a threat to steal every time. He can single-handedly make scoring runs easier.
Pierre's an experienced outfielder and has proven to be a consistent hitter as well, never hitting below .275 his entire career.
Casey Kotchman
2 of 102011 was a prototypical breakout season for a player like Casey Kotchman. The light-hitting first baseman posted a .306 average with 10 home runs and 48 RBI.
He may not provide the usual offensive production you'd expect from a first baseman, but Kotchman can swing the bat and make contact on a regular basis.
Kotchman will be 29 in February, and clearly at that age, there is still room for improvement. Given a better lineup than what he had in Tampa last season, he has plenty of potential to be a better run producer.
Only two errors in 146 games last season means at the very least, you're getting a great glove at first base.
Raul Ibanez
3 of 10Looking at his age, you might not find Raul Ibanez to be such an attractive piece. But looking at it more closely, the case can be made he's one of the best bats left on the market.
Ibanez, 40, still had a very productive year in 2011, hitting 20 home runs and knocking in 84 runs. His .245 average wasn't so hot, but Ibanez can still drive in runs.
When looking for offense, no doubt Ibanez is one of the best options to fill that need.
Derrek Lee
4 of 10When it comes to bringing Derrek Lee to your ball club, the biggest and possibly only concern would be his health.
Lee played in only 113 games last season, but still produced good offensive numbers on two bad offensive teams like the Baltimore Orioles and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
His 19 home runs and 59 RBI could be vastly improved if he has more protection around him.
Lee will also play a solid first base, giving a consistent, proven player in one of the most important positions on the diamond.
Javier Vazquez
5 of 10When you're looking for pitching at this point in the free-agency period, Javier Vazquez's numbers are looking pretty good at this point.
Vazquez went 13-11, posting a 3.69 ERA as a member of the Florida Marlins last season. Given a better team, he could've easily won 15 games in 2011.
He's done it three times in his career and as recently as 2009 when he pitched to a 2.89 ERA with the Atlanta Braves.
It seems Vazquez is a very viable option for any team in the MLB, with the exception of the New York Yankees, of course.
Jon Garland
6 of 10Before 2011, Jon Garland proved himself to be one of the more consistent pitchers in the big leagues, making 30 starts or more every year since 2001.
After battling injuries last season, Garland is ready to come back and return to the form that saw him go 14-12 with a 3.47 ERA in 2010 with the San Diego Padres.
With one All-Star Game appearance and great success in the 2005 postseason run for the Chicago White Sox, Garland is an experienced starter who could help fill out a team's rotation for 2012.
Signing Garland is placing a bet on his health for the future, and it's still a pretty good bet to make given his history.
Luis Ayala
7 of 10Anyone who watched the Yankees last season noticed the contributions of Luis Ayala out of one of the best bullpens in the MLB. And it didn't come easy as Ayala was trying to make the team out of spring training.
Once he made the team, Ayala pitched to a 2.09 ERA in 52 appearances for the Bombers after not having pitched in the majors since 2009. He came out of nowhere to be one of the most important pieces in their bullpen.
Still available, Ayala could make the biggest impact of almost any reliever still on the market.
Russell Branyan
8 of 10If you can get his bat on the field on a consistent basis, Russell Branyan has proven he can drive in runs for whatever team runs him out there.
But because of injury issues, teams needing offense will be hesitant to give him a chance, and that's understandable.
As recently as 2010, Branyan hit 25 homers and at 36, he still has the chance to be a very productive player for a cheap price.
Given his injury problems during his career, Branyan is worth the risk, as he'll most likely demand a minor-league deal.
Ivan Rodriguez
9 of 10No, Ivan Rodriguez doesn't swing the bat or handle the glove as well any more, but he is one of the most experienced players on the market, especially as an option for backup catcher.
Rodriguez spent 2011 backing up Wilson Ramos, and moving forward, he could be a great mentor for any team with a young catcher and/or pitching staff to groom.
Having caught great pitchers and being one of the greatest catchers ever to sit behind the plate, Rodriguez's knowledge is an valuable resource.
Despite his age, it's a pretty good feeling when you have Pudge as a reserve catcher on your bench teaching your younger players..
Roy Oswalt
10 of 10If he's healthy, Roy Oswalt could be a huge improvement for any team in need of starting pitching. Still, his recent back problems have been an issue but if you believe Oswalt himself, he'll be fine in 2012.
Oswalt on the mound and healthy means you have a guy who can win 15 games and pitch to a low ERA as well. His 9-10 record alongside a 3.69 ERA might look like a bad season, but that was done while battling injuries.
His 2010 numbers more closely resemble what Oswalt is capable of and now that he is seeking a one-year deal, he isn't going to be a multi-year risk.
Because of his injury problems, Oswalt has been minimized but still have the chance to be a force to be reckoned with next season.
