2012 NFL Mock Draft: Full First-Round Predictions with Trade Projections

Jake MartinJun 7, 2018

As the NFL season dwindles down to one last game, fans begin to turn their attention to the 2012 NFL Draft.

It's no secret that this draft is loaded with offensive lineman and defensive backs, which team will find the diamonds in the rough?

Here's the complete first round of the 2012 NFL Mock Draft with trades.

1. Indianapolis Colts: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

1 of 32

And with the first pick of the 2012 NFL Draft, the Indianapolis Colts will select Andrew Luck.

Built up to be the greatest prospect ever by the likes of Jon Gruden, Luck will have to prove that he's worth throwing Peyton Manning to the side.

In his senior season, Luck threw for 3,517 yards, 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions and will be held to high expectations the first minute he steps into Indianapolis.

2. St. Louis Rams: Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State

2 of 32

Justin Blackmon will be the answer to Sam Bradford's prayers.

The Rams could use some support on an offensive line that gave up the league's most sacks last season, but it's hard to pass up on a physical specimen like Blackmon.

Blackmon had 1,522 receiving yards and 18 touchdown receptions this season, while putting the NFL on notice in the Orange bowl against Stanford with 186 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

3. Minnesota Vikings: Matt Kalil, OT, USC

3 of 32

Matt Kalil will instantly improve this less-than-impressive Minnesota Vikings offensive line.

"Less-than-impressive" really doesn't do this offensive line justice;  they were bad this season, like really bad.

The Vikings offensive line gave up 49 sacks, which is only four spots behind the league's worst.

Kalil will provide more stability and should provide Adrian Peterson with more alleys to run through in 2012.

4.Seattle Seahawks: Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor (trade with Cleveland Browns)

4 of 32

The Heisman trophy winner is coming to Seattle.

This is a reach, but here me out on this one. The Seattle Seahawks need a quarterback in a bad way as Tarvaris Jackson's 14 touchdowns and 13 interceptions aren't doing the trick, so I expect the Seahawks to go all out to get Robert Griffin III.

I'm talking Atlanta Falcons-all out. The Falcons traded their first, second and fourth round picks last year to go along with this year's first and fourth round picks to get Julio Jones from who? The Cleveland Browns.

It didn't work out too bad for the Falcons with Jones' 959 yards receiving and eight touchdowns.

So why can't the Seahawks trade their picks away for a pick like RGIII that could revitalize the city of Seattle?

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU

5 of 32

Morris Claiborne is one of those special athletes that you simply can't pass up on.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were the tied for 20th in the league when it came to interceptions and Claiborne could easily add more interceptions for the Bucs next season.

Claiborne led LSU with six interceptions in 2011, and that's something that the Bucs, who ranked 21st in the league in pass defense, hopes he can do in a Buccaneers uniform.

6. Washington Redskins: Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama

6 of 32

While everyone else may have Trent Richardson falling down their draft boards, I can't see the Washington Redskins passing up on this dynamic running back.

After all, it is Dan Snyder we're talking about. This is the same guy that signed Albert Haynesworth for $100 million and is well-known for overpaying washed up free agents like Donavon McNabb for $78 million. So how is he going to pass up on this future NFL great?

Richardson rushed for 1,679 yards and 21 touchdowns this season, and after a few years in the league, he will be the best running back in the NFL. With a frame of 5'11, 224 pounds and a bench press of 475 pounds, I have no doubts.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina

7 of 32

This could be the biggest surprise pick of the draft.

But it would be a smart one.

This is higher than most believe Quinton Coples will go, but with the Jacksonville Jaguars needing so many holes filled, why not start on the defensive line?

The Houston Texans showed with Mario Williams that the defensive end position can be a building block for a future great defense, and Coples could certainly provide that.

Coples had 7.5 sacks this season and should fit the Jaguars base 3-4 defense quite well.

8. Miami Dolphins, Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa

8 of 32

The Miami Dolphins need to draft a player that can come in and play right tackle immediately.

Riley Reiff is that guy.

Besides Kalil, Reiff is the best offensive tackle in the draft, and for the Dolphins' sake, they're hoping he could possibly reduce the number of sacks this group gives up.

The Dolphins allowed 52 sacks last year, ranking them behind only the Arizona Cardinals and Rams for the league's worst.

9. Carolina Panthers, Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame

9 of 32

Cam Newton needs another playmaker to go along with Steve Smith and Michael Floyd has all the potential in the world to be that playmaker.

Floyd is big, powerful receiver that has great hands and big-play ability.

Floyd recorded 3,686 receiving yards and 37 touchdowns for the Irish in his career.

10. Buffalo Bills: Courtney Upshaw, DE/LB, Alabama

10 of 32

Courtney Upshaw is a versatile defensive specialist that could bring the Buffalo Bills one step closer to a playoff berth.

The Bills were 28th in the league when it came to stopping the run and 27th in the league in total sacks, which is where Upshaw comes in.

If Upshaw can produce like he did at Alabama, the Bills will have plenty of game-changing defensive plays in 2012. He produced 52 tackles, 9.5 sacks and an interception for the Crimson Tide this season.

11. Kansas City Chiefs: Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford

11 of 32

The tackle position is what the Kansas City Chiefs need to fill the most, so they'll likely take the best tackle available.

With Riley Reiff and Matt Kalil already taken, look for the Chiefs to select Jonathan Martin out of Stanford.

With Martin spending his collegiate career protecting one of the best quarterbacks in the nation in Andrew Luck, he'll be used to protecting a franchise quarterback.

12. Cleveland Browns: Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina (trade with Seattle)

12 of 32

Alshon Jeffery has received little-to-no hype entering this draft, I believe that he could go as early as the 12th pick in the draft.

Because of the trade between the Cleveland Browns and the Seattle Seahawks which saw the Seahawks trade most of their draft picks for RGIII earlier in the slideshow, the Browns will have the 12th pick in the draft and select Jeffery.

In Jeffery's career at South Carolina, he produced tremendously as he recorded 3,042 yards and 23 receiving touchdowns.

The Browns need a receiver in a bad way after rookie Greg Little led the team with 61 receptions and 709 yards this season. Jeffery will make for a nice upgrade.

13. Arizona Cardinals: David DeCastro, OG, Stanford

13 of 32

The Arizona Cardinals need to upgrade their offensive line and that's why they will take David DeCastro with the 13th pick of the draft.

The Cardinals would prefer to have Jonathan Martin, Reilly Reiff or Matt Kalil. But since they won't have the chance to draft them, they'll take the best offensive lineman on the board.

DeCastro is a smart offensive lineman that is rated as the best offensive guard in the draft and he should prove to be useful when protecting Kevin Kolb.

14. Dallas Cowboys: Dre Kirkpatrick

14 of 32

The Dallas Cowboys will be getting a man's cornerback when they select Dre Kirkpatrick.

Kirkpatrick is a an absolute stud that didn't record a lot of stats this season because quarterbacks just about always threw opposite of him.

He's a lock-down cornerback that is able to come up and lay the wood when necessary.

Kirkpatrick had nine passes broken up to go along with his two fumbles this season.

He will make an immediate impact on a team that was ranked 23rd in passing defense.

15. Philadelphia Eagles: Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College

15 of 32

Luke Kuechly is a tackling machine and that's just why he's a perfect fit for the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Eagles struggled with their inconsistent play at the linebacker position this season, and while Vontaze Burfict could turn out to be a future All-Pro at linebacker, it's still a risky pick.

That's why the Eagles pick Kuechly and hope that he can translate his success that he had in college to the pros.

You know, the 516 career tackles kind of success.

16. Indianapolis Colts: Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska (Trade with New York Jets)

16 of 32

The Indianapolis Colts will use their pick that they'll inherit from the New York Jets for Alfonzo Dennard.

The Colts acquire this pick after the Jets trade picks to snatch Peyton Manning.

While the Colts pass defense wasn't absolutely horrible, it wouldn't hurt to add a great cornerback on the opposite side of Jacob Lacey.

17. Cincinatti Bengals: Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama

17 of 32

The Cincinnati Bengals want to draft a cornerback with one of their first round picks and they'll get a fantastic player in Janoris Jenkins.

No one doubts Jenkins abilities on the field, as fans watched him record eight interceptions for the Florida Gators before getting kicked off the team his senior season for getting arrested.

This is a risky pick because of his troubles off the field. But there's no doubt that Jenkins has what it takes to be a playmaking cornerback at the next level.

18. San Diego Chargers: Whitney Mercilus, DE, Illinois

18 of 32

While the San Diego Chargers did have their troubles offensively this season with Phillip Rivers throwing 27 interceptions, their main problems still are on the defensive side of the ball.

The Chargers were 23rd in the league when it came to sacking the quarterback and Whitney Mercilus would certainly help that stat.

Mercilus's merciless play helped him record 22.5 tackles for loss this season.

19. Chicago Bears: Mark Barron, S, Alabama

19 of 32

It's hard to believe that Mark Barron could fall this late, but that's just the way things played out.

The Bears are going to have to replace the void Chris Harris left and who better to replace him with than this stud.

He was coached by Nick Saban through college so he's knowledgeable when it comes to NFL schemes. That and the fact that this 6'2, 218-pound safety has quick feet and can give a nice pop should fit the Chicago Bears' style of play.

20. Tennessee Titans: Nick Perry, DE, USC

20 of 32

While the Tennessee Titans could use some help on the offensive line, the availability of Nick Perry and lack of top offensive lineman on the board is all they convincing that the Titans will need to select Perry.

Perry is an athletic defensive end that could provide the Titans with a number of sacks in 2012, which is valuable because the Titans were worst in the NFL when it came to sacking the quarterback.

Perry's 8.5 sacks in 2011 sure look appetizing to Titan fans right about now.

21. Cincinatti Bengals: Lamar Miller, RB, Miami

21 of 32

Yes, they have Cedric Benson and Bernard Scott, but they lacked respect from every defense out there.

Opposing defenses invited them to throw the football, and as a rookie, Andy Dalton did well.

But he'll do even better when they add Lamar Miller to their somewhat stagnant rushing game that was ranked 19th in the league.

Miller had 1,272 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns for the Miami Hurricanes as a redshirt sophomore last season.

22. Cleveland Browns: Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State

22 of 32

Tony Pashos has to be replaced at right tackle for the Cleveland Browns and Mike Adams is the perfect guy to do that.

The Browns offensive line as a unit ranked 18th in the NFL. With Adams falling in their lap with the 22nd pick in the draft, the Browns instantly become better.

23. Detroit Lions: Kelechi Osemale, OG, Iowa State

23 of 32

The Detroit Lions need to keep Matthew Stafford from hitting the ground and drafting the stud offensive lineman from Iowa State certainly wouldn't hurt.

The Lions gave up 36 sacks last season.  While that's far from being the league's worst—the Buffalo Bills who gave up a league-low 23—it's still far from being the league's best.

The Lions need to upgrade their interior on the offensive line and that what makes Kelechi Osemele such a great pick.

24. Pittsburgh Steelers: Devon Still, DT, Penn State

24 of 32

Should Devon Still fall this late, the Pittsburgh Steelers fanbase would have hit the jackpot.

With Casey Hampton turning 35 this year, the Steelers need to add some fresh blood to their defensive line.

Still has was it takes to be a future great defensive tackle in the league, as he's shown glimpses of greatness with his 17 tackles for loss this past season.

25. Denver Broncos: Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor

25 of 32

Tim Tebow needs someone other than Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker to throw to in Denver.

With Kendall Wright falling this late in the first round, it makes perfect sense for the Broncos to draft another playmaker for their offense.

Wright had 1,663 receiving yards to go along with 14 touchdown receptions in his final season at Baylor He could be a great slot receiver for the Broncos.

26. Houston Texans: Cordy Glenn, OG, Georgia

26 of 32

The Houston Texans honestly don't have any glaring weaknesses.

In fact, if it wasn't for injuries, they could have easily been the best team in the NFL this season. But things didn't go their way obviously.

As for the draft, they could use their first round pick to select a strong and quick offensive guard in Cordy Glenn to strengthen their interior.

27. New England Patriots: Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina

27 of 32

Melvin Ingram played his way into the first round of the 2012 NFL draft this past season.

When all the talk was surrounding newcomer Jadeveon Clowney in South Carolina, Ingram went out and produced 10 sacks to go along with one big play after another.

The Patriots will inherit a playmaking defensive end that has the ability to change a game with his quickness, athleticism and surprising great hands.

28. Green Bay Packers: Jared Crick, DL, Nebraska

28 of 32

Move over Ndamukong Suh, Jared Crick has emerged from your shadow.

The Green Bay Packers ranked 27th in the league when it came to sacks and their defensive woes were quite evident throughout the season.

The Packers can use Crick's versatility on the defensive line to try and get more pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

29. San Francisco 49ers: Juron Criner, WR, Arizona

29 of 32

The San Francisco 49ers could use another playmaker for Alex Smith to throw to in 2012.

In the NFC Championship Game, of Smith's 196 yards, Vernon Davis accounted for 112 of them. The 49ers would certainly be adding a playmaker on the outside if they drafted Juron Criner.

Criner finished his collegiate career at Arizona with 2,859 receiving yards and 32 touchdown receptions.

30. Baltimore Ravens: Vontaze Burfict, LB, Arizona State

30 of 32

Somebody has to take a gamble on him.

With Ray Lewis getting older and former Arizona State-great Terrell Suggs in Baltimore to mentor Vontaze Burfict, this is the perfect place for him

Burfict constantly getting flagged for irresponsible personal foul penalties has to stop for this guy to reach his unlimited potential. Under the guidance of Lewis and Suggs, Burfict can get on the right track.

31. New York Giants: Dont'a Hightower, LB, Alabama

31 of 32

The New York Giants need a great linebacker that possesses both power and the brains to lead a defense. Remind you of anyone?

Dont'a Hightower spent his collegiate career being coached by Nick Saban and that's going to help him catch on quickly to NFL defensive schemes.

With the Giants having a hole at the outside linebacker position, Hightower could be a nice fit.

32. New England Patriots: Chase Minniefield, CB, Virginia

32 of 32

The New England Patriots select the fifth cornerback in the first round by picking Chase Minnifield to close out the first round of the draft.

Despite having a flawed defense, the Patriots made it to the Super Bowl.

But it would have been so much easier with a better pass rush and solid secondary.

Minnifield should help the 31st ranked passing defense in the league.
