Australian Open 2012: Who Is the Most Dangerous Men's Competitor Left?
I wish I didn't have this prediction because I'm one of those guys who likes to be bold, but it appears that we're headed toward a men's semifinal that consists of the top four seeds, which I predicted.
Yeah, I'm just like millions of others in the world who thought that.
Now, among those remaining, who do I find to be the most dangerous? I've decided that I've got to go with the guy who has played the best overall in the tournament.
That guy is Roger Federer.
I had initially counted him out around the fourth round before the tournament started, but the more I thought about it, I began to think that if this is possibly Fed's last run, he's going to come out firing.
To say he has would be a big-time understatement.
Now, before I continue, I have to give him one knock where it's due—his second round match was won via walkover, and Juan Martin del Potro was his first ranked opponent.
Now that that's out of the way, you'd think a tennis player of Federer's age would have at least a few issues with one of his opponents, but such hasn't been the case.
And for the record, that game against Del Potro—again, Federer's only ranked opponent so far—wasn't a game at all. It was a pure demolition, as Federer barely gave Del Potro a chance.
Federer's winners outnumber his unforced errors, thus proving how well he's been playing. His shots are coming in at such a great velocity and with such precision.
This is the Roger Federer that won a million Grand Slams over the course of his illustrious career (OK, he won 16, not a million).
Now, he meets Rafael Nadal to continue one of the sport's most legendary rivalries.
For years, these two were the staples of men's tennis, and you could count on them running into one another at all four Grand Slams each year.
Of course, we've moved on from that time and now have guys like Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray making their own names known.
Still, Nadal and Federer will meet yet again in the semifinals tomorrow to determine who will notch another championship to their massive lists.
I'll take Federer in four sets.
No one is on fire more so than Fed right now, and my prediction is that he'll ride that momentum to an Aussie Open championship.
It will be his last win in Melbourne.
