Australian Open 2012 TV Schedule: Novak Djokovic & Lleyton Hewitt Is Must See TV
When Lleyton Hewitt takes on Novak Djokovic on Monday, the Tennis world should be watching. The men's tennis scene is dominated by Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. It seemed Hewitt's time had passed.
The 30-year-old Hewitt reached No. 1 in the world in 2001. He has won two Grand Slam tournaments in his career, but he didn't have the type of longevity fans may have expected when he reached No. 1 at 19 years old.
It seemed Hewitt was set to make a bigger mark on the game, as he started a run of dominant baseliners in men's tennis, after serve and volley style players had dominated in the era before him.
Hewitt's run was cut short by the ascension of Roger Federer that began around 2002. Hewitt lost to Federer 15 consecutive times from 2004 through 2010. Now, Hewitt has a chance to help stop Djokovic's reign.
Hewitt has lost four straight matches against Djokovic, and hasn't beaten him since 2006, but Hewitt is playing really well right now. If he is able to knock off Djokovic he will become the story of the tournament.
Hewitt has defeated Cedrik Marcel-Stebe, Andy Roddick (retired) and Milos Raonic thus far, so not only is Djokovic the No. 1 player in the world, but he represents a huge jump in the competition from his previous matches.
I have a funny feeling about this matchup today. Hewitt is motivated, and it is possible Djokovic could overlook Hewitt. He has dominated him recently, but this feels like one of those magical and improbable Grand Slam runs.
If Hewitt is able to upend Djokovic, you'll be sorry if you miss it.
