Australian Open 2012 Scores: Shockers We Didn't See Coming from Day 7

Justin WeltonJan 22, 2012

We are nearing the end of the 2012 Australian Open, and there are many favorites still alive. Every year, fans see things that they have never witnessed before. This year’s version is no different.

Day 7 didn’t see too many shocking results, but it did see some shocking finishes.

Tomas Berdych Gets Booed for Not Shaking Hands with Nicolas Almagro

We should be focusing on how well Tomas Berdych responded after dropping his first set, but what is getting the most attention is Berdych’s unwillingness to shake Nicolas Almagro’s hand when the match ended.

You shake hands after every match—this is what you’re taught at a young age in any sport. This rule especially comes alive in the sport of tennis.

Berdych thought that Almagro could have used more of the court to finish his winner instead of going after his head. As you can see, the ball hit his arm, so I’m not exactly sure what he was talking about.

The crowd let him hear it, and rightfully so. He’s the new villain now, and he’ll continue to hear it when he plays Rafael Nadal in the next round.

Rafael Nadal Handles Feliciano Lopez (6-4, 6-4, 6-2) with Ease

Rafael Nadal defeating Feliciano Lopez with relative ease wouldn’t be shocking, but it’s shocking to me seeing how Nadal admitted that he was hindered by a knee injury last weekend just by sitting in his hotel room.

That told me that his injury may be more serious than we think.

It didn’t seem that way because he blasted Lopez in straight sets. He moves on to play Berdych in the next round.

Defending Champion Kim Clijsters Defeats Li Na (4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4) After Losing First Set on an Injured Ankle

We may have seen this one coming, but I have to throw it in the list.

Kim Clijsters injured her ankle in the seventh game of the match. It seemed like she was going to bow out early.

She found strength on her ankle, along with Na imploding, to oust the French Open champion in three sets.

"I said in my mind, keep fighting," Clijsters said according to USA Today.

"

"You never know what happens on the other side of the court. I knew if I could just try to let the medication sink in or if I could get through the first 20 minutes, half hour, I think the pain would go away a little bit and then maybe with the adrenaline I could just fly through it."
