2012 NFL Mock Draft: Which Teams Are Destined to Win on Draft Day?
Depending on the year, the depth of prospects at one position can dictate which teams score big on draft day. That can also be a deception. No one knows how prospects will turn out but multiple picks give you a better chance at success.
Also, teams that have quality rosters, with specific needs can go into a draft focused on specific players and skill sets. Those teams are the ones that are set up to score big in 2012. There are five teams that fit one of those descriptions and these are the categories they fall in fall in.
Teams that Have Multiple First-Round Picks:
Cleveland Browns
No team has a better opportunity to score huge on draft day than the Cleveland Browns. The Browns have two first-round selections and one more in the second round. There is nothing that turns a franchise around like three picks in the first 37 selections.
New England Patriots
The Patriots seem to always manage to have multiple early picks and this year is no different. They have two late first-round picks to use in 2012.
Cincinnati Bengals
Ohio's NFL teams will be on the clock a lot on day one of the draft, as the Bengals also have two first-round picks.
Teams that Were Fringe Playoff Teams or Just Missed Because of Injuries
Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles were among the most dangerous teams at the end of the season, as all of the talent they acquired in the offseason began to gel. Now they have a mid first-round pick, and two second-round selections to better an all ready talented team.
Chicago Bears
The Chicago Bears would have made the playoffs were it not for injuries to Jay Cutler and Matt Forte, Now as they return healthy in 2012, the Bears will have the opportunity to put players around them to strengthen the team. Most Bears fans are happy; Jerry Angelo won't be around to cast a cloud over the Bears' selections.
Here is a complete first-round mock draft, with a concentration on the Bears, Eagles, Bengals, Patriots and Browns picks:
((Disclaimer: some of the music in the prospect videos may include explicit language))
1. Indianapolis Colts—QB Andrew Luck—Stanford
The Colts have all but admitted they will take Luck with this pick. Their best case scenario would be for Peyton Manning to be healthy enough to play, allowing Luck to sit for a year and learn under an all-time great.
2. St. Louis Rams—OT Matt Kalil—USC
Before Jeff Fisher took over, I would have said Justin Blackmon would be the guy here, but not now. Fisher will want to be careful not to add a player that can create the type of situation he had with Vince Young at the end of his Titans stint. Kalil is safe, needed and potentially dominant.
3. Minnesota Vikings—CB Morris Claiborne—LSU
The Vikings need secondary help in the worst way and Morris Claiborne is the closest thing to a shut down corner available.
4. Cleveland Browns—QB Robert Griffin III—Baylor
The Browns have an opportunity to take their franchise in an exciting new direction with RG3. Griffin would give the Browns a great prospect at QB, a marquee attraction and a buzz unlike one the team has had in decades.
A team that ranked 30th in points scored has to start rebuilding their offense at the QB spot. Colt McCoy is not the answer in Cleveland and the Browns will be sorry if they allow an opportunity to draft Griffin slip away. The Browns still need to add weapons. That can even come later in the first round, but it starts with RG3.
5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers—WR Justin Blackmon—Oklahoma State
The Bucs will grab the player the Rams could have had at the two spot. Blackmon will make a nice primary target for Josh Freeman and remove all of his excuses.
6. Washington Redskins—RB Trent Richardson—Alabama
The Skins are heavily impacted by Matt Barkley's return to school. If he had come out, they are almost assured of drafting him or RG3. As it stands, it'll likely be Rex Grossman again at QB. Meanwhile, they draft the best RB prospect in the draft. Richardson looks like he was born to be a bruising Redskins back.
7. Jacksonville Jaguars—DE Quinton Coples—North Carolina
The Jags will likely take Coples here, even though they need help at receiver or tight end. No prospect at those positions will be worth taking this high. They really should trade down, but they probably won't.
8. Carolina Panthers - CB Dre Kirkpatrick - Alabama
Despite his recent brush with the law, the Panthers can't ignore their most dire need, which is in the secondary. Were Coples to slip, they may go for the Carolina product, but from a need standpoint, Kirkpatrick fits best.
9. Miami Dolphins—OT Jonathan Martin—Stanford
New Head Coach Joe Philbin will be looking to build his offense. Matt Moore played well, but Packers' free-agent Matt Flynn seems destined to follow Philbin to Miami. Martin will be installed at RT likely from day one. Martin and Jake Long potentially make for dominant offensive tackles in Miami.
10. Buffalo Bills—OLB/DE Courtney Upshaw—Alabama
Bills will make it three Crimson Tide selected in the top 10 by taking Upshaw. He fits in well as the edge rusher they hoped Shawne Merriman would be.
11. Kansas City Chiefs— OG—David DeCastro—Stanford
Chiefs make it three Cardinal in the top 11 with DeCastro. The Chiefs take him here to strengthen their run dominated offense.
12. Seattle Seahawks—WR—Michael Floyd—Notre Dame
The Seahawks need offensive playmakers. Sidney Rice has been injury prone his last two years and Floyd is among the most talented players in the draft.
13. Arizona Cardinals—DT—Devon Still—Penn State
The Cardinals need to improve their run defense. It was ranked 23rd in the NFL this season. Devon Still is the top DT prospect.
14. Dallas Cowboys - ILB—Luke Kuechly—Boston College
Kuechly fits a big need for the Cowboys—he can replace Bradie James and shore up a weak interior defense for the Cowboys.
15. Philadelphia Eagles—LB—Vontaze Burfict—Arizona State
Burfict was once thought to be a top-five pick, but a tough junior year has some down on him. One mock doesn't even list him in the first round. The Eagles need interior defensive help. Burfict is still one of the best defensive players in the draft.
He plays with an edge, the way you'd love for your middle linebacker to play and he's great in pursuit. His 40 time of 4.67 won't floor you, but when he zeroes in he is missile. Burfict has to learn to control his emotions on the field. They can and have gotten him into trouble before. Andy Reid is a great coach for this type of personality and Burfict would thrive in Philly.
16. New York Jets—OT—Riley Reiff—Iowa
Reiff could possibly replace RT Wayne Hunter. The Jets would probably like to make a bigger splash here but there aren't any big offensive playmakers here to select.
17. Cincinnati Bengals—DE—Nick Perry—USC
The Bengals have many of the pieces they need already on the roster. They just need to mature. With QB locked up for the foreseeable future with Andy Dalton, and his primary target in A.J. Green, the Bengals have key weapons.
On defense, they suffered from some injuries to Keith Rivers and CB Leon Hall. Here I think they take the best player available. Nick Perry is a potential terror as a pass rusher. He is 6'3", 250 pounds and a demon off the edge. He is coming off an ankle injury, so there are some concerns about health, but if he's right, he'll push Frostee Rucker and Robert Geathers for time. With those two, Carlos Dunlap and Perry, the Bengals will have Giants like depth up front.
18. San Diego Chargers— WR—Alshon Jeffery—South Carolina
The Chargers know they may just lose Vincent Jackson this offseason, so Jeffery fits the mold of a big athletic receiver, like Jackson.
19. Chicago Bears— C—Peter Konz—Wisconsin
The Bears probably would go for Jeffery if he were on the board as they have a need at receiver. With him gone, they won't be able to turn away from Konz. He allows the Bears to impact two offensive line positions. They can move Roberto Garza back to his natural guard spot, they expect Gabe Carimi back at RT, and they'll need to add a LT to be solid all across.
With the Chargers selecting Jeffery, that could mean Jackson is gone from San Diego. The Bears should pursue Jackson like madmen. This scenario could make the Bears greatly improved on offense in 2012.
20. Tennessee Titans—CB—Alfonzo Dennard—Nebraska
The Titans are thin at CB and WR, but there are no receivers worthy of the 20th selection available. They go after a top flight corner in Dennard.
21. Cincinnati Bengals—CB—Chase Minnifield—Virginia
Son of former Browns CB, Frank Minnifield, Chase will add depth to a position the Bengals struggled at once Leon Hall went down. If Hall returns without issue, then Minnifield becomes a solid nickel and dime option for an already strong Bengals defense.
He also has the ability to return punts and would be coming back to the state where his father spent many years of his career, albeit with the rival Browns.
22. Cleveland Browns—WR—Mohamed Sanu—Rutgers
Sanu is going to be one of the biggest surprises of the draft. Get your fantasy teams ready. If you're looking for a rookie WR that will make an impact, Sanu will be near the top of the list.
He has amazing hands, is a decent route runner and has had amazing production throughout his career. Defense have keyed on him, but he still produced. He is a converted running back, so his run after the catch skills are advanced. At 6'2", 215 pounds he is the type of receiver that is not easy to jam or bring down. RG3 and Sanu in the first round would be a stellar day for the Browns.
23. Detroit Lions—CB—Janoris Jenkins—North Alabama
Lions pass defense is putrid. They need corners really bad. Jenkins is a talent that is worthy of a top-10 pick, but character concerns have him here.
24. Pittsburgh Steelers—CB—Jayron Hosley—Virginia Tech
If you saw Ike Taylor's performance in the AFC Wild Card loss to Denver, there is no reason to question why the Steelers should be looking for his replacement.
25. Denver Broncos—S—Mark Barron—Alabama
Another Tide player in the first round. Broncos defense struggled mightily after Brian Dawkins' injury. This team needs stellar defensive play to win, and this defense needs a top notch safety.
26. Houston Texans—DT Michael Brockers—LSU
Brockers is potentially dominating on the inside. The Texans have great edge rushers in J.J. Watt and Mario Williams, but Brockers gives them a chance to truly dominate up front.
27. New England Patriots—DT Dontari Poe—Memphis
The Patriots take Poe with the prospects of assembling an impenetrable wall in the middle of their defensive line with the 350 pound Poe and Vince Wilfork. If this team can get to a point where they can absolutely stuff the run, it will take so much pressure off of their secondary.
Poe and Wilfork will be similar to the Vikings' Williams wall, for as long as Wilfork can be effective.
28. Green Bay Packers—DT/DE/LB—Melvin Ingram—South Carolina
Ingram is one of my favorite players in the draft. He is a freak athletically and could literally play almost every front seven position except MLB and NT.
29. New York Giants—RB—Lamar Miller—Miami
The Giants will add insurance for the oft-injured Ahmad Bradshaw with the talented Miller.
30. Baltimore Ravens—MLB— Dont'a Hightower—Alabama
Five Tide players in the first round. Mr. Hightower are you ready to learn the position from the best that ever played the game?
31. San Francisco 49ers—WR—Kendall Wright—Baylor
The Niners need some explosiveness to their passing game. Wright can stretch the field and he would be a tremendous addition to the Niners offense.
32. New England Patriots—CB—Stephen Gilmore—South Carolina
Gilmore will help bolster the Patriots' biggest weakness. He is a quality corner in the Charles Tillman mold. Gilmore could start from day one if he hits camp with the right attitude and buys into the Patriot way.
You could be looking at a guy who is a fixture at corner for the Patriots for the next five to seven seasons. With these two selections in the first round, the Patriots will undoubtedly be better in 2012, as I have them falling short this year. They can address the running game in the second or third round as quality backs will still be available.
