MLB Players Guaranteed to Report to Spring Training Out of Shape

Benjamin KleinJun 1, 2018

After any team's season is over, ownership relies on the players to either stay in shape or get in better shape for the upcoming season. Players have all different opinions on winter workouts and how they go about their few weeks off between the World Series and spring training.

It's obvious that not every player does his best during this time, which is the reason we see players coming into camp looking like never before, both in a good and bad way.

Here are five players that are guaranteed to show up to spring training out of shape.

Vladimir Guerrero, Free Agent

1 of 5

Even though Guerrero is still a free agent, he should get a DH job before spring training starts. The outfielder, now DH, isn't a slim as he used to be back in his days with the Montreal Expos or his MVP year with the Angels.

The 36-year old is at the end of his career, and staying in shape isn't on the top of his priority list during the offseason. Whichever team signs Vlad to a deal won't be to run out ground balls or take pitches; it will be to swing away and see how far he can hit it.

Hanley Ramirez, Miami Marlins

2 of 5

It was clear that Hanley wasn't the happiest of players when he was told he would be moving to third base for 2012 after the Marlins signed SS Jose Reyes. Ever since the Reyes signing, Hanley has been involved in his fair share of trade rumors, but Miami doesn't seem like they will trade him.

The easiest thing for Hanley to do to show his displeasure with the positional change would be to sit on the couch and eat chips for the weeks he's spent at home this offseason. He's listed at 6'3'' and 230 pounds, but would anyone be shocked if he shows up to camp weighing close to 250 pounds?

BJ Upton, Tampa Bay Rays

3 of 5

BJ Upton hasn't turned out to be what they Rays hoped, and constant trade rumors can't be easy for a player like Upton. He isn't his brother, and it seems as if they will never even compare performance-wise. Even though he has been an average center fielder for Tampa Bay and is speedy, that could change over this offseason.

At only 185 pounds after last season, Upton could easily show up to spring training weighing close to, or over, 200 pounds and lose a few steps stealing second base. Eventually, the Rays are going to trade him, and coming to camp out of shape could push them to make that anticipated deal.

AJ Burnett, New York Yankees

4 of 5

With the acquisitions of Michael Pineda and Hiroki Kuroda, AJ Burnett is on the verge of being kicked out of the New York Yankees rotation.

Over the years, we also know that AJ isn't the calmest of players by any means. Burnett is a hot-head, and when things don't his way or he doesn't agree with something, his emotions get the best of him.

He still has two more years left on the huge contract he signed in 2008 and could use this offseason to try and push the Yankees to trade him since he isn't supposed to be a big part of their team going forward. Burnett is a big guy at 6'4'' and 230 pounds, and to see him in March weighing close to 250 pounds shouldn't shock anyone.

Jason Bay, New York Mets

5 of 5

The New York Mets are about as irrelevant as it gets these days, and with Jose Reyes signing with the Marlins, they should finish worst in the NL East. Bay along with David Wright and Johan Santana are the only stars left on the roster, with each possibly being moved before their contracts are up.

After his impressive 2009 season with the Red Sox, Bay has been anything but impressive with the Mets. In his last two seasons, he's hit .251 with 18 home runs and 104 RBIs. He's clearly passed the peak of his career, and usually, that means that a player will start putting on weight until they move to first base or a DH position.

What's the point of Bay staying in shape this offseason if the Mets aren't even trying to win anything this season?
