Serena Williams: Why Serena Won't Win Another Grand Slam Championship

Daniel O'BrienJun 7, 2018

Serena Williams is the best women's tennis player of the 2000's, but the direction her career and life is headed in suggests she will never win another Grand Slam title.

She is still abundantly talented, and she has a chance at winning another championship if her body holds up and she personally wants it.

But here's the catch: Her heart isn't in it, and judging by her recent rash of injuries, neither is her body.

Even after recovering from her serious health issues of 2010 and 2011, she started 2012 off on the wrong foot, literally. An ankle injury seems to be hampering her during this Australian Open.

Williams is 30 years old, and the injury bug may be here to stay. She will be fighting an uphill battle physically for the rest of her career. It will take perfect training and some veteran's luck for her to stay healthy enough to maintain a stretch of dominance.

More disconcerting than the physical letdowns is Williams' recent admission that she doesn't love tennis, or sports for that matter. To me, this is a shame, but it's her life; if she wants to fade away from tennis and pursue other things, so be it.

An aging star who doesn't have her heart in the game is not someone who will be contending for major tournaments much longer. The passion and competitiveness Serena had when she and her sister Venus Williams were in their prime is gone.

Over the last couple years, she has relinquished dominance of the sport, as youngsters such as Caroline Wozniaki, Li Na and Victoria Azarenka have risen to the the top. They're finding ways to wear down Williams, who can no longer control matches like she used to.

With these stars entering their prime and Williams on the back end of her prime, it's safe to say that Williams' chances to hoist a Grand Slam trophy are miniscule.

For those of us who enjoyed watching Serena Williams at the top of her game, it's a sad time to see her retreat into mediocrity without even caring much for the game.

It's sadly apparent that today's Serena is not the 2009 Serena, and we won't see that version of her ever again.
