Philadelphia Eagles: No Steve Spagnuolo in Philadelphia

Ron PasceriJan 19, 2012

Despite all the speculation about Steve Spagnuolo's triumphant return to Philadelphia in 2012, it will only happen if the Eagles host the New Orleans Saints in a playoff game.

According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Jay Glazer has reported that Spagnuolo will be calling the shots for Sean Payton's defense in the Big Easy.  The Saints are two years removed from a Super Bowl victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

The Saints finished 24th in the league in total defense and 13th in scoring defense. They gave up 21.2 points per game in the regular season, but surrendered 64 points in two playoff games, the worst of which was the 36 they allowed the 49ers to score last Saturday.

The most recent coordinator, Gregg Williams, has not been fired. He will likely reunite with Jeff Fisher in St. Louis.

Spagnuolo has his work cut out for him, as the Saints allowed almost 260 passing yards per game, 30th in the NFL. He is however, joining the league's top scoring offense. His only job is to make the defense more competitive, which he should be able to do.

Spagnuolo could have done worse for himself, and surely Philadelphia will be disappointed. Andy Reid is not likely to go outside his comfort zone for a new coordinator, so it seems likely that Juan Castillo will get a chance to show he has learned the ropes after a full season.

Spagnuolo has not signed a contract yet, but it is clear that he found his new team, and the Saints found their man.
