The 2012 Australian Open saw some easy wins on Thursday, as well as a few close calls and upsets.

Tennis stars are moving on to the third round of play, making it look easy. Of course, it's still early in the tournament, so the best is yet to come.

Soon we'll see the best of the best going head-to-head, which is always a pleasure to watch.

That being said, let's take a look at some of the highlights of Thursday's action. All of the scores can be found here

Men's Singles

Novak Djokovic (1) def. Santiago Giraldo: 6-3, 6-2, 6-1

The current best tennis player in the world had little trouble moving on. Djokovic is cruising at the moment, looking to defend his title. It will be a couple rounds before he is truly tested.

Andy Murray (4) def. Edouard Roger-Vasselin: 6-1, 6-4, 6-4

Murray made quick work of the Frenchman, advancing to the third round with little struggle. He knows that in order to win it all this year, he'll have to beat Djokovic, which is not an easy task when vying for your first Grand Slam win ever.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (6) def. Ricardo Mello: 7-5, 6-4, 6-4

Tsonga has pulled off some big upsets in his career, and he'll have to do it again if he wants to win the first major of the year. He had early problems against Mello but finished strong.

Lleyton Hewitt def. Andy Roddick(15): 3-6,6-3, 6-4, Ret.

Roddick looked good at first, but after hurting his leg, Hewitt began to dominate. The American couldn't take the pain anymore, therefore he retired, allowing Hewitt to move on. This is the second day in a row a top American player has been ousted.

Women's Singles

Petra Kvitova (2) def. Carla Suarez Navarro: 6-2, 2-6, 6-4

Kvitova avoided an early exit by bouncing back strong in the final set. It wasn't easy, but she turned her clutch gene on and is moving on, which is good because a lot people believe she will win it all this year.

Maria Sharapova (4) def. Jamie Hampton: 6-0, 6-1

The blonde beauty of tennis, Sharapova had no problems taking down the young American. Sharapova has looked good early on, but the big question for her is whether or not she can keep it together when the competition gets tougher.

Serena Williams (12) def. Barbora Zahlavova Strycova: 6-0, 6-4

Having won the Australian Open five times in her career, Williams is a definite sleeper this Grand Slam. At No. 12, some people are forgetting about her, but she keeps rolling, as she had no trouble advancing.
