Roger Federer: 5 Reasons This Is Federer's Best Chance at Major No. 17

Jeff ChaseJun 7, 2018

The former No. 1 player in the world Roger Federer is looking to get back on top of the tennis world, and this year's Australian Open is where the current No. 3 will get things going by claiming his 17th Grand Slam title.

While Novak Djokovic dominated the tennis world last season, Federer was the only one to claim a slam victory against the Serbian, defeating him in the semifinals of the 2011 French Open

He will need to play at his highest level possible, but for these reasons, we will see the record for slam titles become an even greater gap.

He Is Coming off of a Huge Title

If anyone was concerned about the level of Roger Federer's game at this point in the 30-year-old's career, there is no need to worry.

He is coming off of a huge win at the Barclay's ATP World Tour Final, where he knocked off rising French sensation Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

To get to the final, he had to get through world No. 2 Rafael Nadal. He defeated the Spaniard in just an hour—proving to the world that he is still one of the best players in the world.

Federer was recently carrying some concern after his departure from the tournament in Doha, but it looks as if he is in perfectly fine form.

He Has a Relatively Easy Path to the Semifinals

The one player who could possibly derail Roger Federer from making a run at the semifinals would be Juan Martin Del Potro.

The last time these two met in a slam was at the 2009 US Open, where the Argentinian got the best of the reigning champion.

With Del Potro being sidelined with injuries over the years, it doesn't seem as if he will be an immediate threat to Federer.

Still, Del Potro has proven in the past that he can make some serious noise.

With the amount of time he has missed, and the level of play Roger seems to be at, this just seems extremely unlikely.

Federer Has Nadal's Number

The last time Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal met was at the ATP Tour Finals tournament, where the rivalry had a different result than usual.

Coming into that tournament, Nadal had recently knocked the Switzerland star off at the French Open final, where the Spaniard took the title in a four-set win.

At the season ending tournament, Federer took Nadal down 6-3, 6-0 during the round-robin stage of the tournament. The victory took him just an hour, proving that the world No. 3 is still here to fight till the end.

Both Nadal and Federer haven't been the same player they were when they dominated the ATP tour for many years.

Neither man made the Australian Open final last season, keeping at least one of the two out for the first time since 2008.

Between all the slam events, the Australian Open has the most time between the four tournaments.

At 30 years old, Federer is still a dominant force on the tour, but it is no secret that some of the younger players can make him fight for a win.

With this tournament, he has had enough time to rest before it, and that will give him a better chance at winning this tournament.

With the French Open, Wimbledon and the Olympics all meshed up into one time span, it will be hard for a player to really be all that successful during that time.

The US Open is always a possibility, but it will be coming off of that huge European leg of the tennis season.

The Australian Open provides a great opportunity for Federer to get a slam in the bag before he would have to deal with the hectic summer season.

This Was the Last Place He Won a Slam

The last time Roger Federer won a slam title was at the 2010 Australian Open.

He defeated Andy Murray in that year's final.

He hasn't been able to win one since then, but perhaps he will once again prove that he is the king down under—like he has done four times already over his career.

The French Open is way too hard for him to win, as Rafael Nadal just dominates the surface, while Novak Djokovic will be looking to claim his first title at Roland Garros.

There is a chance that he could return to Wimbledon, the place where he has claimed six slam titles. It will be tough, as players have been playing much better on the grass as of late.

The slow courts at the Australian Open play well to Roger's paced game, and he should be able to control his own destiny once again.
