WWE: Can the Miz Help Rebuild the Tag Team Division?

Rikki SollisJun 7, 2018

Before you jump to any early conclusions, no, I don't think that Miz and Truth will magically end their feud and re-form possibly the most entertaining tag team that I've seen grace a WWE ring in the recent past. Nor do I think that the Miz is going to form a new partnership with another Superstar on the roster.

This past Monday night on Raw, there were a few segments where the Miz was seen trying to enlist other Superstars to protect him from R-Truth. He approached stars like Mason Ryan and Primo and Epico, before eventually settling for Ricardo Rodriguez, who he used to distract Truth before attacking him from behind.

So will the WWE be developing this idea of the Miz looking to hire outside help? In my opinion they would be silly not to. Why? because this is the perfect opportunity to bring up a few talents from the developmental territory to build the tag team division.

It has been the subject of many articles on B/R for many months now that stars like Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose and Antonio Cesaro are ready to be brought up to the main roster; this could be an opportune moment to do just that.

Of course, we've seen a storyline not dissimilar to this in the past. Back in December 2002, Kurt Angle's manager Paul Heyman brought in Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin as a "contingency plan" to help Angle keep his WWE Title. The pair were used to weaken Angle's upcoming opponents, as well as accompanying him to ringside to act as enforcers.

However, Haas and Benjamin (or Team Angle) not only acted as back up for Angle, they also engaged in their own feuds in the tag team division, the most notable against Chris Benoit and Edge in the hunt for tag team gold. Their stable with Angle lasted for around six months, before they would break away from him to pursue their own interests in the WWE.

"The World's Greatest Tag Team," as they renamed themselves, went onto win the WWE Tag Team Championships on two occasions, before they split in 2004 following the WWE Draft Lottery.

Essentially, the Miz would gain two enforcers/bodyguards/whatever you want to call them, and at the same time, the two Superstars could chase tag team gold.

Could this type of storyline work again? We have seen the WWE "recycling" angles recently, including the imploding ring at Vengeance, Rock and Cena (Hogan/Rock 2) and the "Legend Killer" gimmick Cody Rhodes is slowly slipping into. It wouldn't be a surprise if Creative re-used an angle like this, but it could definitely be very entertaining if done right.

If WWE Creative pursue a storyline like this, not only does it secure a short term future for the tag team division, but it also offers the opportunity to bring up some of the FCW talents to the main roster.

Two birds with one stone.
