College Basketball: 10 Questions Going into the Jan 13-14 Weekend

Doug BrodessJun 7, 2018

College Football is over for another year.

College Hoops' races are just starting to heat up.

Almost every conference has started its league play.

And we have a host of quality match-ups for which to look forward to. Every one of the 342 D-1 schools will be in action over the next two days.

Here are 10 questions that will be answered during the Jan.13-14 weekend games:

Can Georgetown Get Back on Track at MSG Against the Johnnie's

1 of 10

Just a week ago, the Hoyas were 13-1, and were considered one of the hot teams in the Big East after opening their conference schedule with wins against Louisville, Providence and Marquette.

But this last week, JT3's crew dropped two straight games at home against West Virginia and Cincy.

Going to Madison Square Garden to play St. John's isn't always the best way to get things going in a positive direction.

But this year's Red Storm are struggling (they've lost three of their last four games) with Steve Lavin's health challenges and their own difficulties with almost a completely new roster.

Prediction: Georgetown takes charge early, but has to hold on for a tough road win.

Thomas Robinson vs. Royce White: Who Comes out on Top in the Battle of the Bigs?

2 of 10

When Kansas hosts Iowa State, it will be more than a match up between Robinson and White, but this battle will go a long way towards determining the outcome of this game in Lawrence.

Robinson is a double-double dude (17.6 ppg; 12.1 rpg; No. 2 rebounder in the country).

Royce White is another big-bodied, do-everything type who leads the Cyclones in scoring, rebounding, and assists (13.1 ppg; 9.1 rpg; 4.3 apg).

While Iowa State is back in the discussion in the Big 12, they have lost 12 straight against the Jayhawks.

Prediction: KU holds serve and hands ISU their second straight conference loss.

Will a Little Home Cooking Help the Road Weary Tigers?

3 of 10

Missouri has played three of their last four games on the road, and none of them have been easy games.

As the Tigers come home to Columbia to face Texas, they know that they normally take care of business on their own court.

Mizzou is 60-3 at home over the last four seasons.

It helps when you have Ricardo Ratliffe (pictured), the nation's leading FG shooter (76.8 percent) on your side.

Prediction: Missouri takes down the Longhorns. Too much talent. Too much experience.

Can Michigan State Keep Things Rolling When They Face Northwestern?

4 of 10

Michigan State opened the 2011-12 season with two straight loses—against North Carolina and Duke.

Since then, the Spartans have peeled off 15 straight wins.

Tom Izzo's team goes into Evanston today to face a pesky Northwestern Wildcats team that would love to get a signature win early in this Big Ten season.

Michigan State has won seven straight meetings at Northwestern, which has lost four of five.

Prediction: The Spartans physicality will be too much for NU to handle. Look for this one to be at least a double-digit win for MSU.

Who Will Win the Bounce-Back Bowl Between the Buckeyes and the Hoosiers?

5 of 10

Ohio State doesn't go into too many games like they will when they face Indiana on Sunday in Columbus.

The Buckeyes not only want to get some revenge on the Hoosiers for beating them in Bloomington on New Year's Eve, but Thad Matta's men will also be trying to bounce back from being bounced in Champaign-Urbrana on Tuesday when Illinois knocked them off 79-74.

But IU will be looking to get back on track too, after going down at home to Minnesota this week.

Indiana has split their two Big Ten road games this season, losing to Michigan State in their conference opener on December 28th and winning at Penn State on January 8th.

Prediction: Ohio State rarely loses at home. This game, though it should be close, will go to OSU.

Can the Blue Devils Overcome Their Road Struggles Against Clemson?

6 of 10

Duke is again one of the best teams in the nation, but they struggle when it comes to games on the road.

Both of the Blue Devils losses (Ohio State and Temple) came on their opponents' court.

All four of their regular season losses last year (Florida State, St. John's, Virginia Tech and North Carolina) came on the road.

Clemson is not a great team (9-7; 1-1 ACC), but they definitely play better ball at home.

Prediction: Duke will take care of business, especially if Mason Plumlee can shake his free throw woes. The 6'10" junior is shooting 39.8 percent on the year, and was 2 for 10 against Virginia earlier this week. Ouch!

Will the Tar Heels Make It Six Straight in Tallahassee Against the Seminoles?

7 of 10

A lot of teams have gone to Tallahassee to face Florida State and came out with disappointing losses.

North Carolina has won their last five contests on the road against the Seminoles.

But it took some Harrison Barnes' heroics last year (a three-pointer with three seconds left) to pull out a two-point win.

Will the Tar Heels offense (86.9 ppg; No. 1 in the nation) or the Noles defense (61.7 ppg) prevail?

Prediction: UNC has too much talent and will win a close one.

Will the Bears Continue to Shut Other Teams Down When They Face Oklahoma State?

8 of 10

Baylor is off to their best start (16-0) and carrying their longest-ever win streak in school history.

Yes, they have a ton of offensive weapons, like Perry Jones III, Quincy Acy (pictured) and Pierre Jackson, but the Bears can play some defense.

They hold their opponents to 37.1 percent shooting (No. 10 in the nation).

Oklahoma State have lost 11 straight Big 12 road games.

Prediction: Sounds like a recipe for another Baylor victory.

Will Anthony Davis Set the UK Freshman Shot Blocking Record Against Tennessee?

9 of 10

Anthony Davis, Kentucky's amazing freshman forward, is closing in on the Kentucky school-record for shot blocks for first-year players.

Davis, who leads the nation in blocked shots with 4.6 rejections per game, needs just five blocks to catch Melvin Turpin's 83 in the 1982-83 season.

Prediction: Davis will block five or more in Knoxville on Saturday, and then keep adding to that during the 13 remaining regular season games.

Will Syracuse Match the Best Start in School History Against Providence?

10 of 10

Jim Boeheim's bunch have the opportunity to tie a school record on Saturday.

Syracuse has opened the 2011-12 season with 18 wins and no losses.

If they beat the Friars for the second time in eleven days, they will match the the 19-0 start by the 1999-2000 team.

The Carrier Dome will no doubt be rockin' as the Orange take the floor to maintain their reign over college hoops.

Prediction: Not only will the 'Cuse win on Saturday, but they will beat  Pitt when they come to town on Monday.
