Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Money's Big Talk Does Nothing to Make Fight Closer

Michael DixonJun 7, 2018

No matter what Floyd Mayweather says or tweets, the fight between he and Manny Pacquiao is not going to happen before Mayweather goes to jail in June.

If you're unaware of what was said by Mayweather, read it here.

After those comments were made, I wrote this, basically saying that Mayweather was doing nothing more than fake posturing. I completely stand behind that belief. Mayweather knows that this fight isn't realistic and is looking for some PR points, so nobody can accuse him of ducking.

But for the sake of argument, let's say that I am 100 percent wrong and Mayweather is legitimately calling Pacquaio out for a May 5 fight. The fight is no closer to happening.

For the fight to actually take place, it takes more than one man calling the other out. It takes more than the challenged fighter accepting the fight. The two men have to sit down and agree on a lot of things, and that's not going to get done in the next five months.

Notice that Mayweather didn't say anything about how the purse would be split, what weight they would fight at or what drug testing would be used. Those aren't small problems, and none of them have even been addressed for a May 5 fight.

Realistically, they shouldn't be discussed right now for a May 5 fight. If the fight does happen then, we're not going to get an accurate representation of the two men.

Negotiating the particulars is not going to be a quick process. It's never been quick between these two, and this is certainly not going to be any different. Still, let's say that the two men agree on terms. They still need to spend a lot of time training, and this fight needs to be promoted properly. If they agree on terms tomorrow, there's not enough time to make that happen.

The time to negotiate a May 5 fight between these two has come and gone. If that was going to happen, it needed to happen immediately after Pacquiao fought Juan Manuel Marquez. Too much time has passed since that fight, and there's not enough time between now and when Mayweather has to go to jail.

What's more realistic is for these two to spend the time between now and then negotiating and agreeing on specifics. At that point, Mayweather can serve his time, and have a fight waiting for him when he gets out. It doesn't need to be immediate; both fighters need the right amount of time to prepare.

But whether it's authentic or not, nothing that anyone says right now makes this fight happen. These two haven't earned any benefit of the doubt. When the fight has made sense, they have found a way to avoid it. There is no reason to believe that it will happen now.
