NBA Trade Rumors: What the New Jersey Nets Could Get for Deron Williams

John NizinskiJan 10, 2012

The New Jersey Nets acquired Deron Williams from the Utah Jazz last season for guard Devin Harris, forward Derrick Favors, and two future first round draft picks. Ever since that trade, the Nets' main focus has been to try and keep Williams on the team long-term.

One way to convince Williams to stay is by winning. The Nets have not been able to do that.

Another way is by acquiring another star to play with him. Again, despite all the Dwight Howard talk, the Nets haven't been able to do that, either.

If this trend continues, Deron Williams will most likely not re-sign with the team. If that is the case, the Nets have to deal Williams and get the best possible deal for him.

While every team may not be interested in Williams, we will look at what such a player would cost each team if they were interested.

Atlanta Hawks

1 of 29

There is a mutual desire between the Atlanta Hawks and forward Josh Smith to be traded. One of his preferred teams is the Nets. The Nets could try to get Smith in order to convince Deron Williams to stay or they could  deal Deron to the Hawks for a package including Josh Smith. The Nets could also include Kris Humphries in this deal and get Joe Johnson back.

The trade could look something like this:

The Atlanta Hawks acquire Deron Williams, Mehmet Okur, Damion James.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Josh Smith, Marvin Williams, Jeff Teague and draft picks.

Boston Celtics

2 of 29

This is an example of a far-fetched scenario, but Rajon Rondo was on the trading block once the lockout ended. This was because the Celtics were interested in acquiring Chris Paul, arguably the best point guard in the NBA. So if another top-notch point guard becomes available, the Celtics might put Rondo on the trading block once again.

If the Nets traded Deron Williams to the Celtics for Rondo, they should look to get back as far into the future draft picks as possible because the Celtics are an old team that could be rebuilding soon.

The trade could look something like this:

The Boston Celtics acquire Deron Williams.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Rajon Rondo, Jajuan Johnson and draft picks.

Charlotte Bobcats

3 of 29

The Charlotte Bobcats probably won't be able to convince Deron Williams to re-sign with them, so they probably won't make this trade. However, this is a hypothetical situation.

The Bobcats have three solid young guards in D.J. Augustin, Gerald Henderson and Kemba Walker. They could string some deals together involving these three guys and land Deron Williams and another star player.

The trade could look something like this:

The Charlotte Bobcats acquire Deron Williams.

The New Jersey Nets acquire two of three previously mentioned guards and draft picks.

Chicago Bulls

4 of 29

The Chicago Bulls already have a top-of-the-line point guard, but they could be lethal with probably the two best point guards in the NBA on their roster. The Nets could acquire some proven talent in Luol Deng and Carlos Boozer.

The trade could look something like this:

The Chicago Bulls acquire Deron Williams and Damion James.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Luol Deng, Carlos Boozer, Jimmy Butler and draft picks.

Cleveland Cavaliers

5 of 29

The Cleveland Cavaliers were left in the middle of the desert with nothing when LeBron James took his talents to Miami.

Then, they acquired the first pick in the draft lottery and selected Kyrie Irving. They hope that Irving can turn into a star and get the team back on track. The Cavaliers could trade Irving for Deron Williams and acquire a point guard that is already a star player.

The trade could look something like this:

The Cleveland Cavaliers acquire Deron Williams.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Kyrie Irving, Tristan Thompson, and draft picks.

Dallas Mavericks

6 of 29

Because Williams grew up in Texas, the Dallas Mavericks could potentially wait until the off-season to acquire him, if he is not going to re-sign with the Nets. There is an outside chance that both Deron Williams and Dwight Howard could sign with the Mavericks this off-season.

The Dallas Mavericks are an older team and have close to nothing to offer the Nets.

The trade could look something like this:

The Dallas Mavericks acquire Deron Williams.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Dominique Jones, Ian Mahinmi, Rodrigue Beaubois and draft picks.

Denver Nuggets

7 of 29

The Denver Nuggets have a good, young team that is led by breakout star Ty Lawson. The Nuggets made a blockbuster deal last season by dealing Carmelo Anthony to the New York Knicks.

The trade could look something like this:

The Denver Nuggets acquire Deron Williams and Damion James.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Ty Lawson, Danilo Gallinari and draft picks.

Detroit Pistons

8 of 29

The Detroit Pistons are a struggling team with two bright, young players. They should really try to keep these players and continue to rebuild this team. However, they could also try to bring in a star player immediately to attempt to turn things around.

The trade could look something like this:

The Detroit Pistons acquire Deron Williams, Mehmet Okur and Damion James.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Brandon Knight, Greg Monroe and draft picks.

Golden State Warriors

9 of 29

The Golden State Warriors have been open to trade discussion regarding two of their top players, Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry. The Warriors also have a solid "big man" in David Lee. The Nets could try to get any combination, if not all of these players, in a deal that would send Deron Williams to the Warriors.

The trade could look something like this:

The Golden State Warriors acquire Deron Williams, Kris Humphries and MarShon Brooks.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Stephen Curry, Monta Ellis, David Lee and draft picks.

Houston Rockets

10 of 29

Another team that could make Deron Williams at home in Texas is the Houston Rockets. The Rockets have some decently attractive young players that they could combine with draft picks to acquire Williams.

The trade could look something like this:

The Houston Rockets acquire Deron Williams.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Kyle Lowry, Kevin Martin, Jonny Flynn and draft picks.

Indiana Pacers

11 of 29

The position that the Nets need to improve right now is at small forward. The Indiana Pacers have a very good small forward in Danny Granger.

The trade could look something like this:

The Indiana Pacers acquire Deron Williams and Damion James.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Danny Granger, Darren Collison and a draft pick.

Los Angeles Clippers

12 of 29

The Los Angeles Clippers just acquired Chris Paul, so this is pretty redundant unless the Clippers want a two-headed horse in their back-court. If the Clippers do not offer either Chris Paul or Blake Griffin, they might not be able to offer the Nets enough, though.

The trade could look something like this:

The Los Angeles Clippers acquire Deron Williams.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Eric Bledsoe, Mo Williams, DeAndre Jordan and draft picks.

Los Angeles Lakers

13 of 29

The Los Angeles Lakers had expressed interest in acquiring Chris Paul, but failed to do that. They could turn their attention towards another elite point guard, Deron Williams.

The Nets do not need another young center, as the Lakers key trade piece is Andrew Bynum. The Nets would, however, have one of the best front-courts with Kris Humphries, Andrew Bynum and Brook Lopez.

The trade could look something like this:

The Los Angeles Lakers acquire Deron Williams and Mehmet Okur.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Andrew Bynum, Metta World Peace, Andrew Goudelock, Darius Morris and draft picks.

Memphis Grizzlies

14 of 29

Another small forward the Nets could look to acquire is Rudy Gay from the Memphis Grizzlies

The trade could look something like this:

The Memphis Grizzlies acquire Deron Williams.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Rudy Gay, Mike Conley and draft picks.

Miami Heat

15 of 29

This trade is basically impossible because the Miami Heat will not have the cap space unless they trade one of their "big three." The one that would probably be the casualty out of the Heat's "big three" is Chris Bosh

The trade could look something like this:

The Miami Heat acquire Deron Williams.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Chris Bosh and Mario Chalmers.

Milwaukee Bucks

16 of 29

The Milwaukee Bucks have a good young point guard in Brandon Jennings. The Nets could try to get him if the Bucks wanted to acquire Deron Williams.

The trade could look something like this:

The Milwaukee Bucks acquire Deron Williams and Damion James.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Brandon Jennings, Tobias Harris and draft picks.

Minnesota Timberwolves

17 of 29

The Minnesota Timberwolves seem to have a "thing" for point guards. They could be interested in acquiring Deron Williams, arguably the best point guard in the league.

The Nets would probably try to get back Spanish basketball star Ricky Rubio in this deal. The Nets would also look to swap one "D-Will" for another "D-Will."

The trade could look something like this:

The Minnesota Timberwolves acquire Deron Williams.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Ricky Rubio, Derrick Williams and draft picks.

New Orleans Hornets

18 of 29

The New Orleans Hornets entered a rebuilding phase and just dealt their star point guard Chris Paul, so their interest in Deron Williams will probably not be too high. However, if they did try to get back a star player like Williams, they will probably have to give up close to the same thing they got for Paul.

The trade could look something like this:

The New Orleans Hornets acquire Deron Williams and Damion James.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Eric Gordon, Carl Landry, Jarrett Jack and draft picks.

New York Knicks

19 of 29

The New York Knicks have become one of the top teams in the NBA, but they are missing a point guard. It is possible that the New York Knicks think they are better off with a team that is built around Deron Williams, Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler, instead of around Amar'e Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler.

They may think this, but that doesn't mean they will trade the guy that took the losing label off of the New York Knicks. However, trade speculations involving Amar'e Stoudemire and Dwight Howard have come up and this may mean that the Knicks are willing to part ways with Stoudemire.

The trade could look something like this:

The New York Knicks acquire Deron Williams.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Amar'e Stoudemire and draft picks.

Oklahoma City Thunder

20 of 29

If the Oklahoma City Thunder is interested, this deal could be good for the Nets because they would get Russell Westbrook.

The trade could look something like this:

The Oklahoma City Thunder acquire Deron Williams and MarShon Brooks.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Russell Westbrook, James Harden and draft picks.

Orlando Magic

21 of 29

Deron Williams and Dwight Howard have expressed interest in playing together. One way for this to happen would be if Williams joins Howard and the Orlando Magic. The Magic, however, probably don't have the right pieces to send back to the Nets to make this deal happen.

The trade could look something like this:

The Orlando Magic acquire Deron Williams.

The New Jersey Nets acquire: J.J. Redick, Glen Davis, Ryan Anderson and draft picks.

Philadelphia 76ers

22 of 29

The Philadelphia 76ers have been looking to get rid of Andre Iguodala for some time now and the Nets could use a small forward. If the Nets could acquire Iguodala with a young guard and other pieces, the two could reach an agreement.

The trade could look something like this:

The Philadelphia 76ers acquire Deron Williams and Damion James.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Andre Iguodala, Jrue Holiday, Thaddeus Young and draft picks.

Phoenix Suns

23 of 29

The Suns are going to need a new point guard because Steve Nash is coming to the end of his career. The Phoenix Suns do not have much to offer the Nets in order to acquire Deron Williams.

However, if they put together their best combination of draft picks and players, they could make an intriguing offer for the Nets.

The trade could look something like this:

The Phoenix Suns acquire Deron Williams.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Jared Dudley, Markieff Morris, Hakim Warrick and draft picks.

Portland Trail Blazers

24 of 29

The Portland Trail Blazers have one of the best forwards in the league in LaMarcus Aldridge and would probably try to acquire Deron Williams in order to play alongside him. So without including Aldridge in the deal, the Blazers would likely have to give up the majority of their key players.

The trade could look something like this:

The Portland Trail Blazers acquire Deron Williams, Damion James and a draft pick.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Gerald Wallace, Wesley Matthews, Raymond Felton and draft picks.

Sacramento Kings

25 of 29

The Sacramento Kings have some good young pieces that they could put together to get Deron Williams on their team.

The trade could look something like this:

The Sacramento Kings acquire Deron Williams and Mehmet Okur.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Tyreke Evans, DeMarcus Cousins and draft picks.

San Antonio Spurs

26 of 29

The San Antonio Spurs already have a very good point guard in Tony Parker. The Nets would most likely look to get Parker if they trade Deron Williams to the Spurs.

The trade could look something like this:

The San Antonio Spurs acquire Deron Williams and Mehmet Okur.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Tony Parker, DeJuan Blair and draft picks.

Toronto Raptors

27 of 29

The Toronto Raptors are struggling to compete in the league. They are missing many key players and Deron Williams would most certainly improve their team.

The Nets would have to get back some of the Raptors' best players and draft picks in order for this deal to happen.

The trade could look something like this:

The Toronto Raptors acquire Deron Williams and Damion James.

The New Jersey Nets acquire DeMar DeRozan, Jose Calderon and draft picks.

Utah Jazz

28 of 29

This trade is very unlikely considering that the Nets got Williams from the Utah Jazz in the first place.

The trade could look something like this:

The Utah Jazz acquire Deron Williams.

The New Jersey Nets acquire Derrick Favors, Devin Harris, Gordon Haywood and draft picks.

Washington Wizards

29 of 29

The Washington Wizards are the worst team in the league this season. They were hoping that their young point guard, John Wall, would take the next step and help them compete.

After the 2009-10 season, the Nets looked as if they were going to be in line to have the first pick in the lottery and draft John Wall. However, the Wizards won the lottery and took Wall. The Nets could have a second chance to acquire John Wall if the Washington Wizards are interested Deron Williams.

The trade could look something like this:

The Washington Wizards acquire Deron Williams, Damion James and a draft pick.

The New Jersey Nets acquire John Wall, Nick Young, Rashard Lewis and draft picks.
