The move certainly raised eyebrows across the NFL and even got the attention of Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, whose son, Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders, could very well land in Tennessee as the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft in April.

The Titans went 3-14 this past season, which also marked head coach Brian Callahan's first year at the helm.

The Carthon firing is a curious move from an owner, Amy Adams Strunk, who offered strong praise for the former GM just 12 months earlier.

The Titans were coming off a 6-11 season that ended with the team firing head coach Mike Vrabel. So they weren't exactly in a good spot at that moment.

They're certainly worse off now, as the Titans' spending spree in free agency and the trade market (wideout Calvin Ridley, running back Tony Pollard, center Lloyd Cushenberry III, cornerbacks Chidobe Awuzie and L'Jarius Sneed) didn't work out.

With that being said, it does seem like a bit of a rash move considering Carthon has only had two years at the helm. Tennessee now has the No. 1 pick in the draft and could very well pick a signal-caller (Sanders or Miami's Cam Ward) that could elevate the team. The quarterback spot was the biggest trouble point for the team last year, as 2023 second-rounder Will Levis, who was benched late in the season, does not seem like the long-term answer.

Plus, there's also the point of whether it makes sense to fire the GM and not the coach. If the Titans' brass was so concerned about the leadership and direction of the team, did it make the most sense to perhaps clean house (i.e. firing Callahan) and start over entirely?

On the contrary, maybe it made sense to keep Carthon to choose his quarterback and see it through for one more year in hopes of making it work in Tennessee.

Regardless, the Titans have now fired two general managers (Jon Robinson, Carthon) and a head coach (Vrabel) since 2022. And if the Titans struggle again in 2025, one can see Callahan being shown the door within a year's time.

Overall, Tennessee seems like a franchise steeped in turmoil right now as major questions loom in Nashville.
