Cowboys' Trey Lance After 5-INT Game: 'You Just Got to Flush It and Turn the Page'

Jack MurrayAug 25, 2024

Trey Lance is focused on moving on from his preseason performance on Saturday.

The 24-year-old tossed five interceptions, including one in the final seconds of the Dallas Cowboys 26-19 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Following the game, Lance reflected on the performance and said that while he won't forget it, he is prepared to put it behind him.

"Ups and downs for sure," Lance said, per Jon Machota of The Athletic. "I turned the ball over too many times. … My confidence isn't going anywhere. This sucks. This is one I'm not going to forget about any time soon, but it's part of it. You just got to flush it and turn the page."

It wasn't all bad for Lance, as he went 33-of-49 for 323 yards and a touchdown through the air and also added 90 yards and a touchdown on the ground. This shows the talent that got him drafted with the No. 3 pick in 2021 Draft, but the interceptions show why his NFL career has gotten off to a disappointing start.

Lance was traded to Dallas from the San Francisco 49ers during the 2023 season. He did not appear in a game for the team and has only appeared in eight games in his career.

That number will likely not increase in 2024 as Dak Prescott is set to start for the Cowboys and Cooper Rush will be the team's primary backup. That means that Lance will likely have to sit with Saturday's performance for a while, as Cowboys owner Jerry Jones stated that he will remain on the roster.

While the five-interception night may be his lasting impression when he hits free agency following the 2024 season, Lance will individually focus on learning from the situation and being prepared if his name is called for the Cowboys.
