Serena Williams Injury: Star's Return to Australian Open Brings Drama to Event

Michael DixonJun 7, 2018

While she's obviously one of the top players in the history of women's tennis, Serena Williams is far from a universally loved figure. But that's not the worst thing in the world when it comes to generating interest in a tournament. Actually, it's one of the best things that can happen.

You don't want too many boring people trying to sell your sport. The game was never better than during the 1980's, when Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe were in their primes. Williams has that edge to her.

So, beyond just hoping for no major injuries, tennis fans everywhere should be happy that Serena has all but said she'll play. According to the Herald Sun, Williams is likely to play in the Australian Open, the season's first major.

Williams has made herself a polarizing figure in the past.

She's also a fantastic player, and that needs to be pointed out. Players prone to the occasional outburst need to win. They're not interesting if they throw fits and never win. At that point, they're sore losers. Nothing more, nothing less.

Serena also ruffled some feathers when after winning a match, she told reporters that she doesn't like tennis and never did.

While those comments don't particularly bother me, they're not going to earn her the rooting interests of any tennis fans. That debate is perfect for the season's first major. Remember, this comes well before the other Grand Slams (the French Open is in June) and before the tennis season in general.

Williams making these comments builds attention for the Australian Open, which is a good thing.

As far as how she'll actually play, look for a long run. Williams won the Australian Open in 2009 and 2010 and is a five-time champion of the event. She didn't play in 2011's tournament due to an injury. So, the last two times Williams has entered the Australian Open, she won it.

The deeper she goes in this year's event, the better it is for everyone.
