Eagles' Players Who Will Be Most Impacted by 2024 NFL Draft Picks

Alex BallentineApr 10, 2024

There's already been a lot of turnover and reconstruction of an Eagles roster that fell short of expectations in 2023. Between trades and free agency Howie Roseman has not been shy about shaking things up.

That will only become more true when the Philadelphia Eagles make their selections for the 2024 NFL draft.

As of right now, the Eagles have eight picks in the draft. But Roseman has never hesitated to wheel and deal on draft day so they could wind up with a much different haul than the one they are slated to bring in right now.

That also means that at least a few players on the Eagles current roster will be watching the draft very closely. New draft picks means new competition for roles and spots that could force other players to either move to other roles or lose them altogether.

There's also at least one player whose job could be made easier depending on the picks.

Here's a look at three players in Philly who will be keeping a close eye on the draft from April 25-27.

OL Tyler Steen

The Eagles have enjoyed the benefits of one of the best offensive lines in football over the last several seasons. Anchored by Lane Johnson and Jason Kelce, the Eagles have also added an elite left tackle in Jordan Mailata.

They've been able to surround them with good guards too.

Jason Kelce's retirement will be the latest thing to challenge the Eagles depth up front. The move will likely bring Cam Jurgens, who played right guard last year, to the pivot. But that leaves the right guard spot open.

The Eagles are usually smart enough to continue drafting depth on the line so they have an in-house option. Tyler Steen could slide into the starting lineup after being drafted with the 65th pick in the 2023 draft.

Steen has the size to also play tackle so he is a good utility lineman either way.

It's likely that Steen will have some competition for his starting spot by the time the draft is over. This draft class is deep with interior offensive linemen. There are six in our top 32 prospects which will inevitably push some strong prospects into later rounds.

The Eagles could even go with a center like Zach Frazier or Beaux Limmer who would allow Jurgens to stay at guard. Either way, Steen's future role could be in jeopardy come draft day.

CB James Bradberry

James Bradberry is still on the Philadelphia Eagles roster, but that might have to do more with finances than his play on the field. The 30-year-old went from star in 2022 to outright liability in 2023.

Bradberry gave up a passer rating of 114.3 and 11 touchdowns in coverage. After giving up just two touchdowns and a passer rating of 51.6 in 2022, he was the prime example of a defender who just wasn't the same last year.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, Bradberry's contract made it difficult to move on from him. A pre-June 1 cut would have actually cost the Eagles $9.6 million against the cap. A post-June 1 cut would have netted no savings at all.

In essence, it would cost the Eagles more to play without Bradberry than to simply keep him on the roster.

That also means the Eagles have no incentive to play him over someone they thing can better serve the defense. He's on the roster because it would cost the Eagles money for him to be released.

The Eagles could find themselves in range to add one of the top corners in the draft. The B/R scouting department's latest mock draft has the Eagles landing Iowa cornerback Cooper DeJean with the 22nd pick.

If the Eagles spend a first-round pick on the position, it's a bad sign for Bradberry. He'll have to show he can bounce back from last season in camp just to retain his starting spot across from Darius Slay.

QB Jalen Hurts

No one is replacing Jalen Hurts anytime soon. The star quarterback's new contract makes it a near impossibility that he'll be moved before 2027.

The money associated with his contract, which includes $179.4 million in guarantees, is going to make it even more imperative that the Eagles are able to find help for the quarterback through the draft. Getting good players on cost-controlled contracts for four years is going to be key for the Eagles to remain contenders.

It's also going to be key for Hurts to reach his potential. For the Eagles to take full advantage of his skills as a runner, they need to have an elite offensive line. They have done that with Hurts to this point, but drafting and developing will be key to continuing that tradition.

The potential to find a starting right guard is important, but finding a successor to Lane Johnson could be a notable move that would help Hurts as well.

Although the Eagles added DeVante Parker and Parris Campbell this offseason, they could still use a pick to find another receiver. If they could land a weapon that Hurts could rely on outside of A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert, it would go a long way toward making the Eagles offense more dynamic.

It would also help Hurts rebound from a bit of a disappointing campaign in 2023.
