NFL Exec: Jets Taking Brock Bowers over O-Line in 2024 Draft Would Be 'Malpractice'
The New York Jets are on the verge of a crucial offseason where their top priority will be to add talent around star quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but some around the NFL are conflicted over what their draft strategy should be.
Per The Athletic's Mike Sando, while there are projections that the Jets would use the No. 10 pick on Georgia tight end Brock Bowers, there's a belief that the team would be better served by focusing on the offensive line.
"When you are picking in the top 10 and you need offensive line help and you take a tight end, that is malpractice," an NFL executive said. "You can't do that. That is just ridiculous."
That exec predicted that Penn State offensive tackle Olu Fashanu would be a better fit for the Jets at the 10th pick. Another exec said if New York doesn't use the 10th pick on an offensive tackle, the team should trade back in the first round and select one with a later pick. However, that exec noted that it could be hard for the Jets to pass up on a talent like Bowers.
"It is hard in the top 10 to not take a building-block position, but the Jets are in a unique spot because they have to win this year or they don't have jobs," this exec said. "You are getting weapons for Aaron Rodgers and he is going to scheme it for you. They have swung and missed on so many offensive linemen. I would think they go offensive line in free agency."
