NFL Combine 2024 Results: Highlights, Reaction and Recap from Friday
The 2024 NFL Scouting Combine continued on Friday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis with defensive backs and tight ends taking the field for measurements and drills in an effort to boost their draft status.
Bleacher Report's NFL Scouting Department lists Terrion Arnold and Kool-Aid McKinstry among the top defensive backs in the 2024 class, but Nate Wiggins and Quinyon Mitchell were among the players who impressed in drills.
Wiggins, a cornerback out of Clemson, was among the top performers across the board on Friday, posting a 36" vertical, 10'7" broad, 1.59 second 10-yard split and a blazing 4.28 40-yard dash.
Wiggins' 4.28 second 40-yard dash was the fastest mark of the day among defensive backs, though he unfortunately suffered a groin injury during his run. The initial medical evaluation is that he suffered a hip flexor injury.
Wiggins, understandably, caught the attention of his former teammates, fans and the media for his sub-4.30 40-yard dash:
Wiggins is expected to be a first-round pick in this year's draft, though he's the No. 50 ranked prospect and No. 7 ranked cornerback on the Bleacher Report NFL Scouting Department's big board.
The 20-year-old is coming off an impressive 2023 campaign with Clemson in which he recorded two interceptions, two forced fumbles, six passes defended, one sack and 29 tackles in 10 games.
Mitchell, a cornerback out of Toledo, also had an extremely well-rounded performance on Friday, posting a 4.33 second 40-yard dash, 1.51 second 10-yard split, 38" vertical and 10'2" broad.
Mitchell has rose up the draft boards since the Senior Bowl, and his performance on Friday will surely only result in his draft stock improving.
Like Wiggins, Mitchell received plenty of attention from the fans and media for his performance:
Mitchell spent his entire college career at Toledo. His best season came in 2022 when he posted five interceptions, 19 passes defended, 41 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss in 14 games.
He followed that up with one interception, 18 passes defended, 41 tackles and two tackles for loss in 13 games.
B/R's NFL Scouting Department lists Mitchell as the No. 12 prospect and No. 2 cornerback available in this year's draft class.
Utah safety Cole Bishop ranked No. 6 among all safeties on the big board, and he likely improved his draft stock with a strong showing on Friday. Bishop ran a 4.45 second 40-yard dash, the fourth-fastest mark among safeties at the combine. His 10-yard split of 1.52 seconds ranked No. 6 out of the safeties participating.
He also posted a 39.00" vertical jump and a 10'4" broad jump, leaving many impressed.
Although Georgia product Brock Bowers is widely considered the top tight end prospect in the 2024 class, he won't be working out at the combine. Cade Stover did though, as the former Ohio State standout and No. 2 tight end on B/R Scouting Department's big board had a commendable day.
Stover finished with a time of 4.65 seconds in the 40-yard dash on his first try, choosing not to go with a second attempt. He also recorded a 10-yard split of 1.59 seconds.
Former Penn State tight end Theo Johnson also tested extremely well after hauling in seven touchdown receptions during his 2023 campaign with the team.
Johnson's 40-yard dash time of 4.57 seconds ranked No. 2 among all tight ends, while his 39.5" vertical jump was also the second-best mark among his peers at the position. At 259 pounds, many were surprised by his tremendous athleticism.
It's fair to assume that Johnson made an impression on the scouts and coaches that watched his performance on Friday, which could result in his name being called much earlier than expected in the draft.
The combine continues on Saturday as quarterbacks, wide receivers, and running backs will take the field in Indianapolis.
