Cam Newton Addresses Viral Youth Football Fight Video: 'I'm Disappointed in Myself'

Adam WellsMar 1, 2024

In his first public comments since a viral video emerged showing him involved in a fight at a youth football tournament last weekend, Cam Newton expressed remorse for letting the situation get out of hand.

On the latest episode of the 4th & 1 YouTube series (starts at 37:00 mark), Newton explained he was "disappointed" in himself for how things played out:

"I don't want to point the finger and say this person said this and that person said that. It's all in the the nature of sports," Newton said. "Am I saying this is the first time it happened or the last time it will happen? It's just something that—it starts with words, and it should have ended with words. That's it. And I'm disappointed in myself by letting it escalate to what it did. And that's why I'm apologetic.

"I've seen clips on clips on clips. I've seen the content that they've put out, or whatever. The truth of the matter is this: Me being in my position, I should've never put myself in that position. Because even then, it's like that s--t could've got ugly. Like, for real. It could've. And that's why I'm trying to bring the seriousness to the situation."

Video of the altercation surfaced online on Feb. 25, with Newton and one person locking up, followed by several other people attempting to intervene and diffuse the situation while another throws a punch.

In a statement from TopShelf Performance to USA Today's Victoria Hernandez, TJ and Steph Brown, the coaches involved in the altercation, were former employees for Newton.

The TopShelf team beat C1N, the team from Newton's youth football organization, on Saturday, which led to the former NFL MVP approaching TJ in the parking lot to boast about how much money he has.

TopShelf's statement noted Newton continued with his taunting after both teams got on the field on Sunday, including saying things like "I know that play," "I taught you everything you know," "I made y'all" and "I'm your daddy."

According to the statement, Steph left the field to address the taunting when Newton grabbed him "by his jacket trying to choke him."

In a statement from the Atlanta Police Department on Wednesday, Newton nor anyone else involved in the altercation "wished to pursue criminal charges."

The Atlanta Police Department also noted no one involved in the situation required medical attention.

Newton's under-15 team did go on to win the inaugural 7-on-7 tournament. The three-time Pro Bowler founded C1N during his rookie season in the NFL in 2011. The program has featured more than 2,000 youth players and currently has three teams participating in 7-on-7 events.
