Jayden Daniels: Going No. 1 in 2024 NFL Draft 'Doesn't Mean a Whole Ton to Me'

Mike ChiariMar 1, 2024

LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels seemingly has a strong chance to be a top-three pick in the 2024 NFL draft, but he suggested Friday that he doesn't view being the No. 1 overall selection as a make-or-break situation.

Speaking to reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Daniels said: "Going No. 1 doesn't mean a whole ton to me."

Each of the top three teams scheduled to pick in the draft have a potential need at quarterback in the Chicago Bears, Washington Commanders and New England Patriots. Daniels has been widely viewed as one of the top three signal-callers in the draft along with USC's Caleb Williams and North Carolina's Drake Maye.

The Bears hold the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, and while they already have a young, promising quarterback on their roster in 2021 No. 11 overall pick Justin Fields, they are still viewed as a candidate to take a quarterback with the top selection.

However, if the Bears trade Fields and go in that direction, it is widely believed that they will take Williams.

The USC product won the Heisman Trophy in 2022 when he completed 66.6 percent of his passes for 4,537 yards, 42 touchdowns and five interceptions, while also rushing for 382 yards and 10 scores.

Williams' production dipped in 2023, but he still enjoyed a great individual season, completing 68.6 percent of his passes for 3,633 yards, 30 touchdowns and five picks to go along with 142 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground.

As good as Williams was, Daniels took over the distinction of best quarterback in the nation in 2023, winning the Heisman Trophy in the process.

The Arizona State transfer exploded in his second season with LSU, completing 72.2 percent of his passing attempts for 3,812 yards, 40 touchdowns and just four interceptions. He also rushed for 1,134 yards and 10 scores.

Daniels is perhaps the most electric dual-threat quarterback in the draft, and it seems unlikely that he will fall beyond the No. 3 overall pick.

Assuming the Bears take Williams or another team trades up to take him first overall, the Commanders will have their choice between Daniels and Maye at No. 2.

Then, the Patriots figure to take whoever is left since they are in desperate need of a quarterback after 2021 first-round pick Mac Jones bottomed out last season.

Any of Williams, Daniels or Maye have a chance to establish themselves as the best quarterback in a stacked quarterback, but they aren't alone.

Michigan's J.J. McCarthy, Oregon's Bo Nix, Washington's Michael Penix Jr. and South Carolina's Spencer Rattler are receiving plenty of hype ahead of the draft as well.

Any of them could potentially make a case for being worthy of a first-round pick, and depending on which situation they land in, they also have a chance to achieve great success at the NFL level.
