NFL Rumors: Insiders Feel Bears Trade Justin Fields for Round 2 Pick, Draft Williams

A consensus may be growing regarding quarterback Justin Fields' future with the Chicago Bears.

ESPN's Matt Miller reported Monday that "everyone I spoke to at the Senior Bowl" guessed the Bears will select USC star Caleb Williams and trade Fields for potentially a second-round pick.

Even after three seasons, it might be too early to write off Fields. He threw for 2,562 yards, 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 2023. Maybe the team's new offensive coordinator, Shane Waldron, will help to unlock a new level in the 24-year-old's game.

The advantages of building the offense around Williams still outweigh maintaining the status quo even assuming Fields takes a step forward in Chicago or elsewhere in 2024.

Williams is widely considered the top signal-caller on the board despite not fully hitting the heights many expected in his final year at USC. Bleacher Report NFL scout Derrik Klassen compared him to Arizona Cardinals star Kyler Murray.

"Overall, Williams is a fascinating prospect," Klassen wrote. "The arm talent oozes off the film, and he is a special playmaker when things break down. Williams is also more put together as a processor than his playing style suggests, even if he still needs work.

"In the NFL, Williams would fit best in a spread-out passing offense that gives him space and enables his playmaking ability, similar to [Murray] or the aforementioned Josh Allen."

Not only would the Bears be getting a replacement who seems to have a higher ceiling than Fields, but they'd also reset the clock on having a prospective franchise QB on a rookie deal.

Instead of Fields hitting free agency or getting a raise in 2026, Chicago would have five years of team control with Williams, which is invaluable toward filling out the roster. That's how the Miami Dolphins successfully loaded up with veteran stars around Tua Tagovailoa.

General manager Ryan Poles might remain confident in Fields' abilities. He'll have a hard time ignoring how much Williams' arrival would make his life easier, though.
