NBA Trade Rumors: Nets Rejected Offer of 2 1st-Round Picks for Dorian Finney-Smith

Paul KasabianFeb 2, 2024

The Brooklyn Nets reportedly received an offer of two first-round picks for forward Dorian Finney-Smith, but the team rejected that package.

Brian Lewis of the New York Post reported the news on Finney-Smith, who is reportedly coveted by six teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers. He also reported the latest on forward Royce O'Neale.

"A source told The Post the Nets rejected an offer of two first-rounders for Finney-Smith, reportedly coveted by not just the Lakers but also by the Mavericks, Bucks, Thunder, Suns and Kings. O'Neale could fetch a first-round pick, and has also been linked to the Mavericks, Nuggets, Pacers, Bucks, Timberwolves, Suns and Kings."

The 30-year-old Finney-Smith has started 31 of his 42 games for the Nets, averaging 9.1 points on 41.2 percent shooting (38.3 percent from three-point range) and 4.8 rebounds per game. Per Basketball-Reference, he has one more year remaining on his contract ($14,924,167 salary in 2024-25) in addition to a 2025-26 player option ($15,378,480).

There's no doubt the Nets should be sellers at the trade deadline. Brooklyn is still one year removed from the breakup of the superteam era, signaled by the trades of both Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant last February (and James Harden in September 2022).

The Nets have some pieces in place to compete and build around moving forward, most notably Mikal Bridges. But the current iteration of this team has lost 18 of its last 24 games, falling to 11th in the Eastern Conference with a 19-28 record.

With that in mind, it makes sense to trade veterans such as Finney-Smith, whose 3-and-D skills could certainly be of use to a contending team.

Finney-Smith is currently dealing with a left ankle sprain, which will keep him out for the Nets' matchup at the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday. Thankfully, the injury doesn't appear too serious:

This year's NBA trade deadline is Thursday, February 8 at 3 p.m. ET.
