Dejounte Murray Trade Rumors: Spurs 'Knocked on the Hawks' Door' About Potential Deal

The San Antonio Spurs reportedly engaged with the Atlanta Hawks regarding a potential trade involving point guard Dejounte Murray, according to ESPN's Zach Lowe.

"I heard from a number of people, an unexpected team that at least knocked on the Hawks' door about Dejounte Murray: Spurs," Lowe revealed during the latest episode of The Lowe Post (1:01:45 mark).

Murray was initially a member of the Spurs before he was dealt to Atlanta in a June 2022 trade.

In 36 starts this season, Murray is averaging 21.1 points, 5.0 assists, and 1.4 steals per game. He's shooting 46.6 percent from the field, 39.4 percent from three, and 81.4 percent on free throws.

Although he's experienced individual success in Atlanta, the Hawks' backcourt duo of Murray and Trae Young hasn't been as impactful on both ends of the court as many envisioned following the trade. The team has gotten off to a disappointing 15-21 start to the season, only good enough for 11th place in the Eastern Conference.

With Murray's four-year, $120 million extension set to begin at the start of the 2024-25 season, the Hawks are expected to speak with teams regarding his availability before the Feb. 8 deadline. The Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, Philadelphia 76ers, Miami Heat, and Detroit Pistons are all reportedly prepared to "engage" with Atlanta in trade talks (via Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports).

The Spurs also appear to be interested in a reunion as the team searches for a dependable backcourt option to pair alongside standout rookie Victor Wembanyama. Although San Antonio ranks No. 4 among all teams in assists per game, head coach Gregg Popovich doesn't have a point guard who can consistently find Wembanyama in the paint.

In fact, no player in the Spurs' lineup is averaging at least five assists each night. If San Antonio is focused on finding a dependable guard that can help Wembanyama's development while also improving upon the team's 6-30 record, Murray could be an option.
