2012 NFL Draft Order: Teams That Are One Piece Away from Making Playoffs
Twenty teams missed out on the 2012 NFL playoffs, but with smart moves in the upcoming draft, a few can propel themselves into the postseason next year.
This season, Andy Dalton, A.J. Green and Vonn Miller proved that rookies can lead their teams to the playoffs.
With some smart scouting and a little luck, these three teams can find big difference makers in this year's draft.
Dallas Cowboys
The Cowboys could have made the playoffs with a victory over the Giants in Week 17. Instead, Eli Manning lit up their secondary with 346 yards and three touchdowns.
Dallas has a few holes in their defense, but if they beef up their secondary, they will will definitely be a playoff contender again next season.
LSU's Morris Claiborne and Alabama's Dre Kirkpatrick are elite cornerbacks, but neither will fall to the Cowboys at No. 14.
However, Nebraska's Alfonzo Dennard and Alabama safety Mark Barron should be available. Either prospect would improve Dallas' 23rd-ranked pass defense.
Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles started the season with Super Bowl aspirations, but those dreams were crushed after a pitiful 1-4 start.
Despite their disappointing year, the Eagles still have loads of talent. If they can upgrade at linebacker, they will be in a great position next season.
Luke Kuechly of Boston College would be a perfect fit, but he will probably be off the board when the Eagles pick at No. 15.
However, Arizona State's Vontaze Burfict should still be available. The 6'3", 252-pound junior is a violent tackler with elite athleticism.
If he improves his awareness skills, he could be the next great linebacker out of Ball So Hard University.
Chicago Bears
Chicago is in the highly competitive NFC North division, but if they give Jay Cutler another weapon, they will contend with Green Bay and Detroit for the next few years.
This year's wide receiver pool is pretty deep, with four prospects likely going in the first round.
The Bears have no shot at getting Justin Blackmon, but Michael Floyd, Alshon Jeffery and Kendall Wright would all be solid additions.
With the 19th overall pick, the Bears should be able to decide between two or more of this year's top wideouts.
