Buying or Selling Edge to AEW, The Rock's Next WWE Match and Latest Rumors

Chris RolingApr 15, 2023

The pro wrestling rumor mill hasn't exactly slowed with the latest WrestleMania now in the books.

How could it? A controversial finish to the main event at WrestleMania 39 and a polarizing Raw after 'Mania event has the WWE mill in a tizzy. Rumblings about expiring contracts and even an upcoming draft help, too.

On the All Elite Wrestling front, it's all about one name—CM Punk. Whether he's back, what he might do and with who, it's all front and center given the events of the last year or so.

It's an exciting time for fans, albeit one where it's almost hard to keep track of things. So let's step back and take a look at the most notable recent rumors and whether fans should buy them at all.

Becky Lynch-Trish Stratus on Hold Until SummerSlam

1 of 4

One might think the sudden bad blood between Becky Lynch and Trish Stratus would spill over into a match and pay off pretty quickly.

One would be wrong.

According to Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats), WWE aims to have that one hit a holding pattern until SummerSlam.

It makes perfect sense, too. Lynch has been a tad rudderless lately, not really competing for solo titles or in major feuds. Penciling her in for a personal feud with an outright legend on the second-biggest show of the year is a no-brainer.

Though it was easy to see coming, Stratus betrayed Lynch, costing her and Lita the tag titles in a loss to Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez. Provided there is careful storytelling and not just endless tag matches to pass time, the feud could be one of the best SummerSlam has to offer.

Verdict: Buying

CM Punk and Young Bucks Won't Work Together

2 of 4

It would appear, at least tentatively, that CM Punk is indeed on his way back to AEW programming soon, many months removed from the now-infamous backstage incident.

According to Fightful Select (h/t Ortman), Punk has a desire to return, although one apparent proposal is that he be kept separate from Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks—potentially made possible by the presence of a new upcoming AEW show on Saturdays.

That's a tough, tough sell. Given what happened between both parties, there's a groundwork there for some incredible storytelling. After all, the best promos, stories and matches in pro wrestling tend to involve a very real dose of reality.

It's also worth considering that if Punk and The Elite exist on different programs, further problems could stem from ratings comparisons and the like. Live crowds wouldn't exactly buy into whatever non-Punk vs. The Elite feud both parties try to do, either.

Were these rookie Superstars, maybe this makes more sense. But all are seasoned veterans who undoubtedly understand the potential of an all-timer feud that helps get AEW back on track at the same time.

Verdict: Selling

The Rock Remains an Option for WrestleMania 40

3 of 4

One of the big appealing points to Reigns beating Rhodes at 'Mania was that it presumably keeps the door open for the Rock to come crashing through and taking part in what started as a family-based storyline.

Turns out that's still on the table. According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Ortman), Rock has left "a crack in the door open" about wrestling at WrestleMania 40 from Philadelphia.

And that's better than no chance, right?

WWE might have ambitions of extending Reigns' current run well past the 1,000-day mark to 'Mania 40 regardless. If the Rock can go at that event, great. If nothing else, he and the company have plenty of time to plan ahead, be it proper training, clearing his Hollywood schedule, etc.

But Rock still being on the table is a good thing, and it's obvious he'll never fully shut the door.

Verdict: Buying

WWE Confident Edge Wouldn't Go to AEW

4 of 4

Let the current buzz tell it, Edge's final match in WWE is this August in Toronto.

From there, who knows? If Edge and the company don't work out a deal to keep things going, could he explore options like AEW, where Christian currently calls home?

Just don't tell WWE such an idea. According to WrestleVotes (h/t Ortman), the company doesn't think there is much of a chance that Edge would ever go to AEW.

Sell WWE's confidence here and the idea he would only ever suit up for the biggest on the block. This is a new mini-golden era of pro wrestling, and guys aren't afraid to company-hop. That's like saying CM Punk would never return and legends like Sting wouldn't go to new places.

Edge undoubtedly would, especially if he's sold on the idea of teaming up with Christain one last time as his career winds down. And were WWE smart, it would realize fans would flock in droves to see such a thing, too.
