WWE Royal Rumble 2001: Top 5 Moments from the Memorable Show
WWE Raw is going to be a huge show tonight. There is no doubt about it. Fans are eagerly waiting for the show to start in a few hours. Sadly, that is not the only big event on the horizon.
The WWE presents the Royal Rumble each and every January. Today, I continue my look back at past Rumble events. Remember, these are just my opinions! Let's get started.
5. Chyna vs. Ivory
1 of 5Honestly, this makes the list because of how bad this story was. I hate to use the word "fake," but this was just dreadful to watch. It dragged for months, and I never once cared.
Chyna was a nice talent 10 years ago. Ivory was a great heel who could wrestle well. Sadly, these two feuding over Chyna's "Broken neck" was not entertaining at all.
It reached a totally ridiculous level at the 2001 Royal Rumble. I do not even care to post the link to their "match." If you wish to see it, go ahead and look it up...
4. Drew Carey Rocks!
2 of 5Drew Carey was excellent here. His backstage segments with different WWE Superstars were handled perfectly. Him actually competing in the main event was the icing on the cake.
Great job by WWE! Great job by Drew Carey!
It is performances like this that make celebrity inductions into the WWE Hall of Fame worth while. He was a great inductee last year, and I wish to see more of him in the future.
3. Tag Team Title Situation
3 of 5Yes, the tag team scene was amazing over 10 years ago. Yes, it is nearly gone nowadays.
However, I must highlight this particular night as one where 2001 saw many (way too many) title changes in the tag team scene.
Edge and Christian lost their tag team titles to the Dudley Boys here.
They then traded the belts back and forth before Edge and Christian won them at WrestleMania. Then Undertaker and Kane got them a few weeks later. They lost them a week later to Stone Cold and Triple H, who lost them a month later. Finally, the Dudley Boyz got them back in June.
From there, it get even more messy. The "WCW" tag titles were introduced, and it became a joke. Undertaker and Kane got another title run. Kanyon and DDP were champs.
The APA got a short run. Palumbo and O'Haire were champs for a short time with WCW. The whole situation was too much to handle. The Hardy Boys got a run with the gold, and I am sure I am forgetting another few teams as well.
In the end, the Dudley Boys closed 2001 with all the tag gold and unified the titles.
See my point? As great as the tag scene was, the titles just could never stay put. Some will say that was great. Others, like me, do not like to see any title be passed around that much.
Just my opinion!
2. Angle Beats Triple H
4 of 5This was for the WWE title. Kurt Angle was the heel while Triple H was the "tweener" here. Oh, how I wish "tweeners" would stop!
Anyways, these two had a great match, but it was completely overshadowed by the outside interference. Trish Stratus was in the corner of Angle. Stephanie McMahon was with Triple H. Vince McMahon was somewhere in between.
Add on top of that Stone Cold costing Triple H the title, and you have a lot of moving pieces. Even with all of that going on, this was a very memorable situation for the top prize in this industry.
1. Great Rumble Match
5 of 5Were Undertaker and Kane together?
Who were the surprise entrants?
Was Austin going to be able to compete? What was The Rock doing in all of this?
So many questions!
In the end, everybody came through and delivered a great Rumble. I did not enjoy the 2000 Rumble match at all, so this was welcome. Throw in Drew Carey and the Hardy Boys fighting, and you have a classic match to be re-watched for years to come.
The final two men were Kane and a bloody Stone Cold, and the ending sequence was spectacular. Kudos to WWE on an amazing night!
