Browns' Team Needs to Fill in 2023 NFL Draft
Not only do the Cleveland Browns not have a first-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft, but they also don't have a selection in the second round, either.
So, they're going to be waiting for a while before getting involved in this year's talent grab, which is set for April 27-29 in Kansas City.
After the Browns are finally on the clock at No. 74, though, they'll be highly active. That will be the first of eight picks the team has over the final five rounds of this year's draft, during which it will look to stockpile some young talent.
Cleveland has already filled some of its roster holes this offseason. It has bolstered its receiving corps by trading for Elijah Moore and signing Marquise Goodwin. It has also signed several quality defensive players, such as defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson and safety Juan Thornhill.
Here's a look at the Browns' biggest remaining needs they must address in the draft.
Defensive Tackle
1 of 3
The Browns signed Tomlinson to a four-year, $57 million deal, and he should greatly improve the interior of their defensive line. Plus, he's 29, so he will likely continue to be a productive player for the entirety of that contract.
However, Cleveland still needs to bring in another defensive tackle this offseason. The unit was one of the team's weakest this past season, and it needs to assure that isn't the case again in 2023 by building better depth to help withstand any potential injuries.
Though the Browns likely won't be able to draft a defensive tackle worth starting over Jordan Elliott, they could add one who they can develop behind veterans such as Tomlinson. That could be beneficial for Cleveland in both the short and long term at the position.
Texas' Moro Ojomo is a DT who could be available still when the Browns are first on the clock. He may not be the biggest lineman at 6'3" and 292 pounds, but his athleticism could allow him to have NFL success. Cleveland may want to take a chance on him.
Linebacker
2 of 3
There are plenty of young linebackers with a ton of potential on the Browns' roster, but that doesn't guarantee they'll all become strong NFL players over the next few years. So Cleveland needs to keep building depth there, just in case.
At this point, the Browns could be in some trouble if they lose a couple of linebackers to injuries in 2023. So despite not having any early draft picks, they may want to try to target LBs who could quickly contribute for their defense.
One potential fit for Cleveland may be Oregon linebacker Noah Sewell. He may not get taken until the second or third day of the draft, but he's a high-upside player who got a lot of time on the field while with the Ducks.
Because the Browns have so many late-round selections, perhaps they'd even consider taking numerous linebackers. If they do, they should eventually find the right mix of players that can help the unit have more success in the future.
Cornerback
3 of 3
Cleveland is set with two of its starting cornerbacks, as Denzel Ward and Greg Newsome II are talented players who could lead the team's secondary for some time. However, the team lost a key CB when Greedy Williams signed with the Philadelphia Eagles on March 16.
At this point, the Browns don't have many great options for corners who could play the slot in 2023. Could it find a starting-worthy CB in one of the middle rounds of the draft?
Jartavius Martin could be the perfect fit for the Browns. The former Illinois standout mostly played in the slot in college, but he also got some snaps at safety. That would be appealing to Cleveland, which could use another depth option at the back of its secondary as well.
The Browns don't have to get Martin to fill this need, though. They just have to find a cornerback who can adequately play in the slot. And there should be some other targets for them to consider for the role.
