2012 NFL Draft Order: Teams That Must Try to Trade Up for Andrew Luck
The Indianapolis Colts are in a great position with the No. 1 pick in the 2012 NFL draft.
They will most likely select Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, but they have another option. If another team offers them a huge trade to try to get Luck, the Colts can take it.
They'll know they can do it because they still have Peyton Manning and a talented group of veterans like Dwight Freeney and (likely returning free agent) Reggie Wayne to lead the team in the near future.
Other teams that need quarterbacks don't have that luxury, so we'll have to see if someone offers multiple draft picks and possibly players for the Colts' No. 1 pick.
Let's take a look at three teams that might just be desperate enough to offer a king's ransom for the chance to draft Luck.
Washington Redskins
The Redskins currently have Rex Grossman and John Beck as their starting quarterbacks.
That's clearly not a good direction to go in as a franchise. The Redskins need a guy who can be their quarterback for the next 10 years.
If there's one owner who isn't afraid to make a big splash, it's Dan Snyder. A lot of his moves haven't worked in the past, but Luck is as close to a sure thing as we've seen in the past 20 years.
Trading future picks for Luck would be one of the smartest moves of the Snyder era.
Cleveland Browns
Colt McCoy just isn't cutting it so far in the NFL.
Granted, he doesn't have a lot of talent around him, but he should be progressing at a faster rate than he currently is.
The Browns need to make a switch at the position if they are going to improve as a team. They also need to address their running back and wide receiver positions, but that's another story entirely.
Getting Luck would be a major upgrade, and it would be worth the risk for a franchise that doesn't have much going for it lately.
Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins haven't had a good quarterback since they passed on signing Drew Brees. Things would have been much different for this team if they had taken a chance on the man who just broke Dan Marino's single-season passing record.
But now, the team needs to address the quarterback position this offseason or face another year with Chad Henne and Matt Moore.
Getting Luck would solidify the position for years to come and would allow them to focus their attention elsewhere in future drafts.
They have a very good team, but inconsistencies at quarterback have cost them shots at the playoffs in recent years.
If Luck is as good as advertised, the Dolphins could potentially leapfrog the Jets and Patriots in the AFC East.
